Replace "Play 98.7" with "Rewind 99"

Let's get serious and talk about a station that really needs to get focused based on it's signal, it's talent, and the Tampa Bay area. Enough with "PLAY"... it's time to "REWIND". Let's face it, Play 98.7 is never gonna win the ratings game against 100kw hit and AC music stations like CC's WFLZ and WMTX and Cox's WPOI and WWRM. It's just not gonna happen. Let those stations fight it out and do something different. Pick up the listeners that are looking for something old, but new. OK.... so The Point is gone... and MJ is retiring. NOW is the time to grab those 30 somethings with a station that's different. Retro, pop, classic alternative, new wave, and old school favorites from the 80's and 90's. Hit STOP, and press REWIND. I give you "feel good favorites from the 80's and more". "98.7... Rewind 99"

DO IT... NOW. I won't even charge you a consulting fee. I'm serious... this is the direction that 98.7 needs to go.

Sound great, 30 somethings and people like me need a radio station playing a variety of music like that. Someone who's too old for CHR (or doesn't like "that" type of music) but would prefer something newer than what "Oldies" and "Classic Hits" play.

I gotta disagree this time Parttimer. Take a listen to Rewind 100.3 Chicago (WILV) and it sounds very different from Q105. "Q" is skewing much older these days and is more of a competitor to The Eagle. I just don't hear a lot of 30 somethings saying Q105 is there favorite radio station. You gotta take 98.7 and make some noise. It's worked for Hot against FLZ and there's no reason with an air staff already in place that they can't reposition to grab former Point listeners and those are that craving late 80's and 90's music. Seriously... it seems to be it would be doing better than "Play".

Rewind is a great idea.
93.3FLZ dropped Rewind Sundays.
Wild 94.1's Old School Lunch is now 1 hour instead of 12-1:30.
No more Point.
I smell a winner.
If anyone at CBS is reading this, take me with you if you do.
I'm officially done with my Cox Radio internship in Orlando.

I think Play sounds as good as Mix and better than HOT. However, I guess it's doomed eventually. Since WLLD did just as well on 98.7, why not switch them back?

Are you suggesting that any "Oldies"/"Classic Hits" station should now position themselves with the name "Rewind", as in "Rewind 98.7" or "98.7 Rewind-FM" or even "Rewind Radio"?

I'm all for it. Sounds good. Why do I feel like this is highly unlikely?

Because you must know none of my suggestions are ever listened to.

No. I'm suggesting that on this particular frequency, in this particular market, that a station programmed and positioned such as this is bound to bring in better ratings and additional revenue for it's owners. It's not a major change. You've already got an air staff that probably knows the music and the demographic. And the listeners that "Play" does currently have, most likely wouldn't completely delete 98.7 after the change. I'm suggesting that this format adjustment would possibly increase listenership and revenue without starting completely over and or spending a ton in marketing. But what do I know... like Jeff says, I doubt anyone in local radio management would be caught dead suggesting an idea that they read about on a message board such as this.

Like I said before, if you work at CBS, this advice is free. I won't even charge a consultant fee. Just give me a free T-Shirt when you flip it.

... "Rewind Radio"?

If any station decides to roll with that name, they might need to deal with these folks... ::)
They call it "rewound", probably picked it up from WABC.
... And WABC has since dropped it.

I don't remember anybody predicting Hot AC would come to WSJT after Smooth Jazz. Maybe CBS would do something totally not thought of again?

The best move for 98.7 is to move now to “Magic 98.7” “Today’s rib and Classic Soul” or “98-7 R&B”. Either way the new Market Manager from West Palm (with B106.3) certainly understands the value of the urban adult format…he should move immediately to ditch Play 98.7!

I agree that an Urban AC format will do well with many demo categories. I would think a 25% current R&B with 75% "proven" R&B/Soul mix dating back to the Motown days would appeal to many. It would complement Q105 and should attract better revenue levels than Play does.

Yeah, especially since at this very moment I am listening to Star 94.5 (WCFB) out of Orlando. Like the music, would be nice to have a station in Tampa playing R&B. Especially since WCFB can't be heard in Tampa.

I definitely think R&B would be the best choice, although the "magic" name is taken already in this market

For peeps that said make it a Classic Alternative station.. is that a joke? cause this isn't 1996..no one listens to 97X why would they listen to any other station that plays that junk. IMO

They really need to switch 98.7 to "Tampa Bay's Best R&B and Classic Soul! Play 98.7." or "Tampa Bay's R&B and Old School"
Yes, keep the name. I streamed KISQ and WRKS (98.7 Kiss FM New York) at work today and they sounded great. The only reason I switched out of Kiss was because their fwwd had issues. However, I got to hear a ton of songs not played in Tampa. For example:

KISQ
Diana Ross - Upside Down 07.02.2012 12:01pm
Prince - 1999 07.02.2012 12:05pm
Kano - I'm Ready 07.02.2012 12:08pm
Blondie - Heart Of Glass 07.02.2012 12:11pm
Soft Cell - Tainted Love 07.02.2012 12:15pm
Madonna - Papa Don't Preach 07.02.2012 12:19pm
The Miracles - Love Machine 07.02.2012 12:24pm
DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night 07.02.2012 12:26pm
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - Lost In Emotion 07.02.2012 12:30pm
Company B - Fascinated 07.02.2012 12:35pm
The Ohio Players - Love Rollercoaster 07.02.2012 12:38pm
Midnight Star - Operator 07.02.2012 12:42pm
