Congrats to JACK-FM in Boss Angeles...the ARB released today show them as the #1 English-speaking station for 25-54 Adults.

Kudos to JACK in NY and Chicago for improved showings in markets #1 & #3.

WCBS-FM's 25-54 Male numbers jumped from 2.3 to 4.1 in Nassau-Suffolk along with 18-34 Male going from 1.2 in the spring to 3.4 for the summer book.

While I am enthusiastic about the format in general, I had to laugh at your notation of increased numbers in NY and Chicago. An increase that takes you from 18th to 16th is hardly anything to get excited about.

What they're doing in L.A., Phoenix and St. Louis, however, is proof that when done right AND when orchestrated properly, the format is a winner. Even in non-major markets, places like Columbia SC, Austin, Louisville, the approach is working like gangbusters. But, of course, the nay-sayer sour grapes crowd looks at NY & Chicago and tries to project their mediocrity over the entire approach, as if "Jack" poisons the entire format. Which, it clearly does not.
 
Having a successful, if not the most successful, Jack in Nashville for over a year from May,
I find it amazing that it has been, with the exception of an Arb here and there, amazingly consistent,
especially in the 25-54. I certainly look into the future wonder if and when the burnout factor will happen.
I just don't see it yet. The music has not ventured far from the orginial set and run period after the
first 90 days of launch. Has anyone found a Jack station that sounds vastly different from month to
month musically and seen any ratings changes (+/-?) I think you have to segment the NY population
like CJ did to break down the listenership for the demo and see where you shakeout in your own
race to capture the top billing per demograpic. Funny to, that Jack didn't inflict the damage of AC
Mix 92.9 that everyone considered possible. Now we have a non-agressive Hot AC running at Mix
and doing less than nothing, a Classic Hits that's not focused trying to wedge itself between Jack
and The Rock 105.9 with a chance to inflict little, if any, damage as programmed currently. The Rock
has tightened up musically but Jack hasn't blinked. Should be interesting to see what damage happens,
but it looks like nada. South Central Radio Group continues to dominate with two stations against
the C-clusters. Jack on.

Actually, if you think about it, the burnout factor should be less with V.H. stations. They don't turn over their playlists nearly as fast as most library-based formats and the smart ones are always adding fresh titles (at least, if they're doing research). I think they only get in trouble if they just keep the list they sign-on with and don't constantly cultivate their playlists.

The V.H. stations that are less "Jack" and more "Adult Hits" are hurting ACs all over the place. Just north of you, Louie in Louisville is just killing the ACs there (WVEZ and WXMA) and in St. Louis (where The Arch has put a dent in KEZK and KYKY 25-54) and Phoenix (the Peak beating Mix and KEZ 25-54) Bonneville VH stations have put big dents in their AC competitors, as well. Ditto with Austin, where Bob is way ahead of Majic and Mix, beating them soundly.

Has your "Jack" down there added personalities, yet? The handful I mentioned above have jocks but many still do not. Perhaps our supposition a year ago that to have long-term success some personality component would have to be added.

Jack Minneapolis goes to #4 25-54 adults, #6 18-34. Very, very strong.

Also, get this: Mike in Boston #6 25-54, The Arch in St. Louis #1 25-54/#3 18-34, WRRK Pittsburgh #3 25-54/#5 18-34.

Not bad for a failing format, huh?

I think most people that make discouraging remarks on this board are more "anti-Jack" than "anti-variety hits". At least that's the case with me. I like the variety hits format, when done right. Jack, IMO, is not being done right.

But, then again, what do I know. I'm just a radio programmer wanna be. :(

U are right-most of the **format's** haters are just anti jack------but it's those doods who just lump em in all together........jack, arch, peak, mike

mostly cuz they just don't get it
