Report: FOX leaning toward "Authenticated" Live Super Bowl Streaming

Well let's see here. Your network holds rights to the single most-watched sports event of the year, bar none, and the other two networks streamed it without any restriction. Your network holds back streaming of regular shows except to those whose video provider crosses your palm with premium retrans money. Now you want to limit live streaming of the Super Bowl to only them?

I wonder what the NFL thinks of this? Discuss...

But first, CLICK HERE for the backstory.

Does this matter for events that you can still get on free TV? And people with crappy OTA reception who care enough probably already have a Pay TV provider.

The real question is what does Congress think of it.

They can't agree on anything, except that it's the right of every living and breathing American to watch the Super Bowl on free TV.

But nothing else. I think the NFL cares more about having games on free TV than Congress does.

OK, I get it.

Streaming rights are typically in the contract. So its up to the owner of the copyright to decide. If it's not in the contract, the rights belong to nfl.com. Fox's rights are strictly traditional TV. Those rules may also apply to content that is created by Fox, like pre-game and post-game, but branded as Super Bowl. If they put the NFL's name on it, it belongs to the NFL, not Fox. If they do a generic pre or post game, it's theirs.

How are they going to get cablecos to pay for streaming access when most of their customers can get it OTA? It makes sense that watchESPN is only available to cable subscribers but why an event that's available OTA?

Why begrudge them the opportunity to get additional revenue? As was stated, it's already available free OTA, so if you want to watch on a computer or mobile device, you may have to pay for the privlege of doing so.

but why pay to watch on a computer or mobile device when you can watch it free OTA, and with probably better quality?

It's really a moot point as the SB is already picked up and streamed from a whole host of off shore sites.

Are they setting a precident for the very long term here? Will we still have OTA telly in 2020? Almost certainly. I'm not so sure about 2030.
