Report: Merlin 'Raids" 1010 WINS

Another sign that Merlin Media is ready to start an all-news battle in NYC is word that no fewer than five news people are being wooed. Merlin is expected to take control of 101.9 FM programming and sales operations this Friday under an LMA agreement.

And in Chicago, Feder reports today that two WBBM employees are heading to Merlin's WKQX, along with WGN's former ND and a former WLS co-host.

I'll play devil's advocate here.

It's still possible that Merlin has a news/talk format lined up for "WYNY." The news talent Randy's hiring could constitute a significant local news department for live/local news updates every 30 minutes and/or a morning all-news block. That would be a helluva way to take on both WABC and WOR, neither of which have a serious local news presence of note, while also lodging a huge thorn at the side of WCBS and WINS.

Again, just look at how Randy built WLW in the mid-80s. An all-local talk format, with an big news department.

This will be very interesting. I normally an AM radio guy, but it would be cool to have an All News Station on the FM Dial.

I agree with you Nathan! Going all-news against CBS' two-headed news monster in NY makes no sense. A News/Talk hybrid with a strong local news presence would seem the way to go, much like Bonneville's KIRO-FM Seattle. Perhaps some of the talent Merlin raided from WINS could become talk hosts. You won't have superstars like Rush and Sean on this station and that won't be a bad thing in NY. If 101.9 goes news/talk with mostly local programming, WOR and WABC are in trouble. WCBS and WINS won't be immune either.

Regarding WINS, remember 101.9 won't have the coverage issues heading west into NJ WINS has. Just something else to think about! :)

I do listen to WCBS 880 and WINS 1010 all the time.Is anybody from WCBS 880 going over to the new station.Or they are going to stay put.I probably can tune in the FM 101.9 where I'm located now.I will see.
