Rescan to pick up My 48

While rewinding through some "Simpsons" episodes, I noticed some serious ignal problems on Thursday. Now there were minor problems Thursday evening when I turned on the movie, but I had seen it. Friday, things were normal again.

When I rewound through the Wednesday episodes during the weekend I saw a crawl saying that due to upgrades we would need to re-scan Thursday. Obviously I didn't. Why?

They added a subchannel 48.2
I'm not getting it.

It called "Cool TV" with music videos. I first noticed it during the evening on 9/30/10. While music videos aren't my first choice for viewing, it is good to see station's taking advantage of the digital technology and attempting to increase their audience and revenues. I wonder when channel 8 will do something with their sub channel(s)?

I don't know of any FOX stations doing any Multi-Channel transmissions (unless Raleigh's Fox50 is - but, they would be an exception).

Okay, I had to type in 482, but it was there. I didn't even have to do anything and the next time I changed channels with the down button it was there.

FYI: I noticed this past Friday night 10/22/10 that ABC 45 has fired up their sub-carrier 45.2 and are programming country on it.

Fox8 getting a subchannel soon

from another board:
WGHP will be getting a subchannel sometime next year. Time frame hasn't been determined yet and I would suspect any carriage deals haven't been setup yet either. It will obviously be available OTA even if no one carries it! It will be the new "Antenna TV" network. http://antennatv.tv

Antenna TV is launching on January 3rd, 2011 and is a retro network with legacy programs and movies.

What are these subchannels and how do you pick them up?

I know I probably sound stupid but I'm not quite following this....TV is just channel 5,6,7 to me.....what the heck is 42.2?

If you're on cable or satellite, then it's still "5,6,7...." Like they said back last summer [or was it '08?], "nothing's changed."

For over-the-air, it's "x.1, x.2, sometimes x.3" unless you are watching an old tv, then you could only watch translators and low-power signals, and it could still be "5,6,7..."

No problem, it is a bit of a change from TV as it was known for so very long. In a nutshell, digital broadcasting allows a station to transmit, simultaneously multiple programs, kind of channels within a channel.

In other words, say a hypothetical channel 7 wanted to air three 30 minute programs.

In the analog TV world, they would have to schedule them one at a time, one at 7pm, another at 7:30, then the third one at 8.

With digital TV, all three programs air at 7 p.m., one on channel 7.1 (termed "seven-point-one" or "seven-dash-one"), the other on 7.2 and the third on channel 7.3.

During NCAA March Madness, CBS stations can show multiple games going on at the same time this way.

If you're watching TV via cable, the channels b probably look more as they have for many years than the way I described above, but they do with an antenna.

if you're watching over the air (that is, with an antenna) you can get these sub-channels.

if you're on cable, it depends on if the cable co makes them available.

for instance, channel 12.2 is wxii's subchannel. they broadcast the "THIS" network on 12.2. over the air, it's simply channel 12.2. on time warner it's channel 121 digital cable.

you would be amazed how much you can get with an antenna.

I've picked up that station myself.

During the severe weather Tuesday and Wednesday nights, I had to watch WXLV and unlike what I was experiencing this past summer, I had no problems.

Actually, when I went back and watched the tape of WSOC, they had all of "The Middle" but given what was happening at 7:00 that was not guaranteed. WXLV has no news department so all they'll ever do is crawls.

I don't know about Tuesday because I was not taking chances.

By the way, does anyone know if you can watch "Jeopardy" online? Or at least see the clues and the correct questions? Because both WCNC and WFMY were preoccupied one of the nights. WFMY showed most of the show but kept interrupting late but couldn't seem to get the sound to work, so they went back to the program. You'd think for Final Jeopardy they could have come back at the end of the 30 seconds while the answer was still on the screen and then shown the correct question.

Oh, one more detail about Tuesday. My 48 was off the air when I first turned it on. That meant I lost at least one "Simpsons" episode. I rewound and saw part of one and maybe another. And even when they finally came back there were squares and stripes, but all is well now.

I had to tape "Don't Forget the Lyrics" from cable. Which meant I had to watch "Raising Hope" on DTV. No problems, though.
