Resignation at WPRO

News Director Robert Kennedy has tendered his resignation after two years effective 5/9. It seems there was great joy coming from Paul G's office on this annoucement. You see, the PD at WPRO has little to manage at station, since none of the air talent he can control. So, he turned to micromanaging the news department. It is sad to see a station with such a good news reputation is now saddled with HUGE morale problems. Many of the news folks have not had a raise in years, while the King of Meatball Monday gets six figures. In addition to his family wanting to move back west, Mr. Kennedy had his fill of Paul. So get your resumes in!

Paul G is doing a kick azz job at WPRO, but I think maybe it's time we get a real news man to run it right for the PRO news room. Dave Barber! please come Save US!

" Ok Pally, in the news today, ahhh, hold on, were the frigg did my copy go, sh-t! " Ok, maybe not.

WPRO has a wonderful News Team. Good luck to all!
Cheers!
Chatty.

NOTE: "Save US." "US." Hmmm...

Matt deserves that job.

Sadly, this situation is not atypical.
Layoffs continue EVERYWHERE.
Yesterday, a station owner told me, "the business model no longer works."

Hey Joint-Chinese: It's easy to criticize.
Let's hear YOU try THIS: http://barbercast.podomatic.com/entry/2006-10-30T15_42_41-08_00#

PS: I DO respect Joint-Chinese's need to stay below-the-radar.
CLEARLY he-or-she is a WPRO insider.
(And -- for SOME reason -- THE NAME "Joint-Chinese" is amusing. I don't know why. It just sounds FUNNY.)

PPS: RE Last night's Tonight Show with Jay Leno: IS-or-is-not Cindy McCain A BABE???

Harland-

Ms. McCain IS a babe! Plus, Ms. McCain is rich!!

As for my screen name. . .I once owned an apartment in Macau. What is the language of that country?? Correct! Chinese. But you may simply call me D'Joint.

Nothing WONG with that!
But seriously...

Folks, I think D'Joint is pulling-our-leg.
And his/her wry sense-of-humor COULD be a clue as to JC's identity.
;)

And JC: If you DID own a joint in Macau, you probably made a PILE of do-re-mi if you sold lately, with Macau the world's new casino construction hotspot. Yes, unlike Rhode Islanders, Macau WELCOMED the jobs, the tourism boon, and the-most-respected-name-in-its-industry, Harrah's.

As an entertaining voice on WPRO used to say, "Roll those bones!"

Holland:

I totally agree that today's radio business model is 40yrs behind the times. I was at a client station yesterday and heard a spot telling people this great restaurant was on Route 17, but NEVER gave the city. Now, the spot did a pretty good job of making me hungry but never gave me the town it was in. That's not being local.....

People come and go in markets all the time but advertisers or copyrighters think we all know where this restaurant on route 17 is located. That's just not the case. Surveys show an average market changes 20% in population within any given year.

Just my two cents for what it's worth.....

"Quality Control" seems quaint now, eh?

I keep hearing weather forecasts AFTER 4PM begin by telling me how-it's-going-to-be "this afternoon..."

Stuff like this is a consequence of mission-crippling debt that big companies took on during consolidation unleashed by the Telecom Act of 1996. In a seller's market, buyers over-paid for stations to-the-extent-that these stations cannot fund on-air programming sufficient to defend against iPod, satellite radio, Internet audio/video, and the dwindling attention spans of time-pressed listeners.

The result?
"Blah blah blah..."

Still, smart stations ARE turning-lemons-into-lemonade? With big, debt-laden public companies "burning-the-furniture," ANY careful investment diligent stations make in programming content will be all-the-more-conspicuous, to listeners and advertisers.

When is Mr. Kennedy leaving? Ever since the announcement here, I've heard him everyday....did he just step down as ND?
