Former KAAY jock, Don Payne, passed away quietly at home after a valiant fight with pancreatic and liver cancer on Sunday, December 12, 2010. Arrangements are being made, his wife informed me and he will be laid to rest in Hot Springs, AR.
Don had the distinction of running the last "Beaker Street" on KAAY when upper-level administration decided to discontinue the wildly-popular program in the latter days of the station's Top 40 days. Don went on to Indianapolis, IN and became Chief engineer over several radio and TV stations. He was also a Ham radio operator and wanted to become active once he got to Indy, but a heavy work schedule, and lately, the disease, precluded him from getting on the air.
As I hear again from his wife, I will report the funeral arrangements here.
Rest well, Don.
