Rest In Peace Karen Garcia

I know those in the Bakersfield market, as well as those in Visalia and Fresno area were shocked to hear that Karen Garcia passed away. Most recently night jock at KUZZ, Karen also did afternoons at KBKO, promotions at Buckley Radio in Bakersfield, as well as worked at KJUG in Visalia.

I had the pleasure of being her PD in Bakersfield when we launched KBKO and know I speak for others at our station when I say she'll be missed. Her quirky "Kesney Chesney" still makes me smirk. Our prayers are with her family in Fresno as well as her co-workers and friends at KUZZ and elsewhere.

Godspeed Karen.

I listened to Karen quite a bit growing up in Fresno - back on the old Star 101. She was a major motivation in my interest in radio and I know we share many mutal friends and former coworkers from Central California.

She's shined and left her mark on this world. No doubt she will shine even brighter in the next.

My thoughts with her family and friends.

I was sad to hear about the passing of Karen. She was a wonderful person to be around, and she loved our business. One of the best Christmas parties I've ever attended was at Karens. It was shortly after I joined the staff at Star 101. Karen went out of her way to make me feel welcome.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and many friends in Central California.

Not being called "Murder"...

From the KUZZ website:
KAREN GARCIA DEATH TERMED "SUSPICIOUS"
11-10-2005 Bakersfield police and the Kern County Coroner's Office confirm they are investigating the death of KUZZ disc jockey and music director Karen Garcia as a "suspicious death." Investigators tell KUZZ news that injuries found on the body led to unanswered questions, although investigators are not calling it a homicide case. Chief coroner's investigator Jim Malouf says a cause of death has not been determined.

Re:Karen Garcia Murdered as of 11-11-05

My information was as of 11-11-05 @ 12:00PM
KUZZ site has not been updated yet. Coroner could always
change the press release.

The Coroner's report did not say that she was murdered. It said that there was "suspicious body trauma" and that toxicological and microscopic tests were to be done as well as further investigation by BPD. That was the specific wording in the press release from the Coroner's office. Please don't tarnish the great memories that many of us have of Karen by spreading unsubstantiated rumors. There's just no reason for it.

Re:Karen Garcia Murdered as of 11-11-05 according to KNZR

Steve Darnell it was your own Jaz McKay today 11-11-05 that did a rant today that he hoped they catch Karen Garcia's killer. It was your Jaz McKay that reported today her death was at the hands of another which means murder to me. Perhaps you should do as I do and listen to KNZR.
For the record: I just contacted a friend of mine who is a fan of Jaz McKay and herd the very samething on your radio station as I did. A deep hearted rant from Jaz about getting her killer.
If she was not murdered then why would your Jaz Mckay "who I think is the best thing to happen to KNZR in years" spend time ranting about it?.

Steve Darnell please explain to me how reporting she was murdered (based on a report from your station)would tarnish her in anyway.
A DJ of our station was found murdered, reporting her cause of death did not tarnish her in anyway. I did do everything I could do to make sure her killer was cought and now sits on death row. Sarah Weir being murdered did not change the fact she was one of the best.
Steve I am sorry I trusted your station for reliable information, trust me it will never happen again!. For now on I will only trust KERN for my Kern County NEWS.

Re:Karen Garcia Murdered as of 11-11-05 according to KNZR

According to your earlier post, you made your statement about Karen based on KUZZ's website and a reference to the coroners report, not Jaz McKay and KNZR. Now for some reason you are using this thread as an opportunity to attack my radio station. You obviously didn't read my post in the spirit it was written. Karen was a friend and a co-worker that I had known for over 10 years, working with her in Fresno and Bakersfield. I, along with others, will miss her. It would be appreciated if instead of speculating how she passed away on a chat board filled with warm comments from friends and former coworkers, that we wait until the coroner determines the cause of death before making such bold statements. You did not know her, so therefore you have no emotional connection to the situation. Many of us who did know her are saddened by her passing and are wondering what happened to her. Making bold statments like "Karen Garcia Murdered as of 11-11-05" without knowing that for sure just doesn't seem to serve any purpose. That's simply all I was trying to communicate.

The coroner did NOT say it was death at the hands of another. For the record, and to settle this once and for all, here is the exact wording of the press release from the coroner:

Details: On November 7, 2005 at 2120 hours, the decedent was discovered deceased in her residence by co-workers. An autopsy was performed on November 8, 2005 to determine the cause of death. During the autopsy, it was discovered that Ms. Garcia had sustained trauma to her body appearing suspicious in
nature. Ms. Garcia's cause of death is not known at this time and is pending the results of microscopic and toxicological analysis as well as further investigation by the Bakersfield Police Department.

--end quoted material--

Anything beyond that is sheer speculation. So far the only accurate reporting of this story is on KUZZ, the KUZZ web site, and in the Bakersfield Californian. Everything else has been highly speculative or flat-out wrong.

BTW,even if it were "death at the hands of another," that would not make it a murder. Such a death can be accidental, or a crime such as manslaughter, or even self-defense.

Talk show hosts are not journalists. Anyone who relies on any of them for accuracy does not understand what they do.
