Rest in Peace, KLOL (1970-2007)

This station has now gone to radio heaven. After 37 years of playing the best rock'n roll, and lost its morning duo of Walton & Johnson over to KPRC-AM, Cumulus has finally nailed the last nail in the coffin. Instead of going to the top, KLOL has gone down to the ground. Today's rock sounds like garbage, and it is sad to see a great station to go off the air, and replaced it with Jack-FM. No Offense, I was a good run, and I think the people who worked there (Including Mid-day Hotty Wendy Miller) will probably find work somewhere.

Uhh... I'll go ahead and say bye to KIOL.

KLOL has been long gone.

KLOL died the died 101.1 became Mega........KIOL was a rimshot trying to bring back the old essence of KLOL but it was too late.......You are right though, today's rock sounds like garbage....Thats why KIOL went mostly CLASSIC Rock...but with the rimshot signal, it could not compete with 93.7.....NOW with JACK, they have a broader audience to appeal to...including the BPT area....which NEEDED something else besides MIX 104.5 (GAG) or 94.1 KQXY (ac/hip-hip/ac rotation of songs 24hrs a day!)......I LOVE the JACK format amd have been my 100.3 JACK FM T all day (the DFW JACK freq).....a lot of people who saw me in it said they have heard the new JACK on 103.7 and LOVE it!! THIS could work for Cumulus......ALL I know is IT WAS ABOUT TIME! I thought Cumulus or someone should have done a JACK format YEARS ago in Houston......

Well, I guess the real rimshot - (with golf shows interrupting the music at nights) 105.3 BOB FM Woodlands - (really Hempstead) can finally just turn the transmitter to the off position and go away with 103.7 JACK - FM now on the air. May the Hendersons rest in peace.

There has to be something to do with 101, I mean come on someone could be better than Estereo Latino 102.9. I mean 103.9 is great but its also not imortal.

Huh? Do you read the posts you reply to? The thread is about the rock format on KLOL which Cumulus tried to revive on KIOL, not about the Spanish format now on the KLOL frequency.

Phu-leeeeeze.

Re: Rest in Peace, Rock 103-7 (1970-2007)

What I'm trying to say is this: Rock 101 is dead, Rock 97-5 is dead, and Just about right now, Rock 103-7 is dead! I think the Runaway Radio has runned out of the city like The Tennessee Oilers. (Titans, that is). Only the KLOL calls remain intact-and it is still used by CC for its Spanish Hits Music. (used to be Hurban).

AMEN!!! Bob-FM will NEVER EVER cover the Woodlands.....unless Roy boy gets a translator to get into the Wdls area...
And NOW with the REAL JACK format on (and it DOES cover the Woodlands on table top radios), Bob is a dead horse...time to shoot it..

RIP, KLOL. KLOL has been dead now for a couple of years, and the apparent reincarnation (KIOL) is now deceased as well.

Jack FM will be a negative for several Houston / Beaumont stations -

106.9 - the Point
107.5 - K- HITS
104.5 - Mix 104.5
94.1 - Q94

I think some of these stations will need to change their approach as a result. This could be a good thing.

Who are you kidding? Jack FM will have the same impact KIOL had---NOTHING! Have you driven around Houston lately? Well, by my car I can only pick up the station for a few minutes at a time in the car before it picks up static and/or interference. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SIGNAL IN HOUSTON. Perhaps it will have an impact in Beaumont, but Houston---fugetaboutit!

As for the format itself, all it is is an MP3 player or IPOD with commercials. The format is a LOSER. Most people today are aware that they can go out and purchase any run-of-the-mill MP3 player, program their own music and have their own personal Jack without commercials for about $25 or less if they use eBay.

To a large degree, it depends what is on the MP3 player as to whether many will listen. But the one demographic radio wants are people who have disposable income and are apt to spend it. If they have money and are apt to spend it they are probably in posession of a sufficient MP3 player already.

The result...there is no reason to listen to this station ???

This logic applies to any station. Give someone MP3s and an Ipod and they have no need for any of the Houston stations. There is very little compelling reason personality wise to listen to any of them.

WRONG!

Dean and Rog compel me to listen every morning. They walk the fine line between crass and class. Chalie Pulilo is easily the best sports talk show host I have ever heard. Rich Lord is also very compeling for me but they keep pairing him with poor partners. Nearly any of the NPR news programs and even more of their weekend programs garner my attention. I can take Rome three days a week but not five.

None of that comes on my IPOD although I guess I could pay for their pod casts if they were available in all cases and if I wanted to listen to dated commentary or dated jokes. For me, personality drives my desire to listen more often than not.

Well stated and I wholeheartedly agree. I'll get off my Sirius or XM (I have both) for Rome occassionally, for Palillo, Lord, Rush, sometimes Hannity, Savage and some of what is going on at KGOW 1560. It's personality driven, not programming per se'. I have not listed to FM radio in about 2 years since getting satellite and my IPOD. I certainly don't represent everyone, but I am what everyone in radio is warning advertisers about. If terrestrial radio is going to survive the long run it must go back to featuring entertaining personalities. This cost cutting, voice tracking and overall homogenization of the medium perpetrated by CC, Cox, CBS, Cumulus and the rest of them will do nothing but continue to destroy terrestrial.

I used to really enjoy Paul Berlin. I had in my collection nearly 80 percent of everything that he played but would not break out the old cassettes or LPs when I"m home alone. He "framed" the music beautifully with anecdotes and stories.

I actually will disagree with you to a degree.

Networks can provide good programming if it is personality driven. You stated that you listen to Rush, Hannity and Savage (ugh on all 3 counts). They are not local personalities but are syndicated with local bumpers on either end of their content. Paul Berlin or someone of like talent would play well on a national basis I feel. Maybe not. Maybe so. But I do agree that personalities drive my desire to listen as well.

As dismal as KIOL's programming was, I tried to always catch Wendy Miller during my lunch hour because she had a great on-air personality! (Hey, there's that word again!!) Usually she would play a few gems not on the Stairway-To-Hotel-Freebird playlist... Even a few times breaking format and playing a NEW song by an OLD artist. i.e. Rush, Ozzy, The Cult, etc. (Something the Buzz or the Arrow would never ever do). There is now a huge gap in Houston's rock radio arena. I couldn't possibly be the only one that feels this way. Perhaps someone will step up and maybe do it right this time??? Or maybe not... ??? ...and please no more "active-rock" speeches...
