Penguins broadcasting legend Mike Lange passed away last evening at the age of 76.
Clearly he had not been in good health for some time. I remember when he first came to town in '74.
The Pens radio broadcast was not the big production that it is today. He handled the whole thing basically
by himself. Three periods of play-by-play, the between period breaks, all of the live spots for Schaefer Beer
and the Fort Wayne Candy and Cigar Store. He got a five-minute KDKA news break to use the restroom.
My sister used to wait tables at an establishment he frequented. She told me "He was by far the nicest guy
I ever served. And a very generous tipper."
RIP.
