Restrictions on what to play on Pulse 87??

is a dj not allowed to play "too new" of a song on pulse 87 during a mix show??
i've heard a couple of radio personalities tell the mixshow dj to play something brand spanking new that no one has heard yet, and the response is usually "I aint tryin to get in trouble."

I hope u guys understand what im asking lol.
thanks

would u be able to pm me the reason why or is that a subject u just don't touch?? lol

the reason why I asked is b/c 1 day i'll like to be a mixshow dj for a dance radio station

Let me guess

Pulse 87 doesn't have the song yet, and the only way to get it is to download it illegally. Or, Pulse might have the single, but the record label would not want the song to air until a certain date (think about last year when Pulse leaked "4 Minutes")

so the dj can only play what was given to them from the different record labels??
if they purchase a song, from lets say traxsource, they still have to wait for the label's approval to play it on air??

If a song is available for purchase, I think the label would want radio to play it.
Labels usually send CDs to radio stations well before they hit stores and iTunes. They tell the stations not to add the song to the playlist until a certain date, and not to share it with anyone outside the station. That's usually done for popular artists like Britney Spears and most other Top 40, but it's sometimes done for indie rock. I remember a few years back when Britney released "Me Against The Music" many stations played a 30 second "teaser" the day before its radio release, and then played the full song at midnight.

While I have no knowledge of Pulses policy as it pertains to Mixshows, I can tell you that some stations have mixshows in which the programming department will tell the Mixer not only what to play but when the song has to be played in the mix. Some stations give mixers a little leeway in playing music that isn't on the playlist but is already approved by programming as something that is ok to play. It is extremely rare in this day and age where a mixer on a commercial signal in a major market can play what ever he wishes to play. It's rare but it does happen occasssionaly.

The reasoning behind it is that the programmer wants total control of what is going out over the airwaves. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I believe that most mixers given the chance would stick to the stations sound but some have not and a programmer today isn't taking any chances.

wow.
very interesting.
thanks for the info.
does the programmer usually tell the mixer what to play when the mixer is doing a live broadcast from a nightclub or party??

Broadcasts from clubs have more leeway but the mixer is still usually told that they need to fit a number of songs into the set. Stations are very strict and tight with their on-air product now.
