Resurgence of Radio?

The OP asked for suggestions.

Actually that's not true. This thread was originally about changes in the indecency laws leading to a resugence of radio by young people.

OK, I wrote that incorrectly. But the idea is correct. The original question was something like "will the lack of indecency rules....blah, blah, blah" which led to a more general question of how to "fix" what is wrong with music radio today. At least that was my interpretation. If I got off track, my apologies.

But if that "credibility" is not apparent to the listener (after all, is the common wisdom these days for the jock to play the music and shut up?) how does it become apparent to the listener?

That's where the multiple platforms come in. Interaction. For music shows, that happens off the air. And the amount of talk and "entertainment" depends on the format and daypart.

I don't hear such stories from non-country on-air staff - ever. Those people are mostly gone over the past few years.

Blame that on the music industry. At one time, all the labels had people who specifically interacted with radio people, inviting them to dinners with the artists and attend concerts. Now, the music industry is in such chaos that it's eliminated a lot of those people. Except for country. And the music industry wonders why artist development is so much better in country. This is why.

By the same token, in the 70s, you had a few thousand radio stations. Now you have over 14,000. A label can't invite all of them to dinners and concerts. That's where focusing on top talent and making them available in smaller markets comes in. A DJ in Sandusky Ohio might not get invited to Reba's house. But the guy from Columbus will.
