RETIRING WITHIN 10 YEARS??? WHO???

Let's face it. Once you're in your 50s your on shakey ground. When you're in your 60s even if you want to stay on the air, unless your numbers justify it,a station will find a way to "convince" you it's time to leave. Who knows what radio will be like in 10 yrs and if some of today's older more experienced jocks can keep adapting to the changes. I'm thinking PRO-FM's Giovanni and LITE ROCK's David Jones have to be in their mid 50s. Both are well established. Neither has anyone waiting to step into their shoes. What will happen and how much longer will they keep at it or be allowed to keep at it. I think David's situation is better due to the age of the station's listeners. Giovanni and Kim still pull great numbers but audiences and their preferences will continue to change over the next 10 years.

Then there's Paul and Al who I'm pretty sure are a little younger but the population of this market being what it is and rock's declining popularity, can they last another 10 years?

Any opinions? Who is going to step into these people's shoes?

That's one of the unintended consequences of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. All the consolidation that happened resulted in relatively fewer people going....as the saying goes....."town to town....up and down the dial".

It all leads to where things get kind of stagnant.

For example.....much as I love the work of Geoff Charles....I never would have dreamed he would still be here in this market on-air after all these years.

But then again....this is Rhode Island, and as I pointed out in another thread not too long ago....guys in local TV like Walter Cryan and Truman Taylor hung on longer than even the guys mentioned in this thread starting post.

Geoff Charles, who is in his 60s, is a huge part of the 'HJY brand. He brings in a great deal of advertising dollars. In fact, he does more promotional commercials than he did 20 years ago.

And didn't Paul and Al recently sign an extension?

Despite the Rock format's nationwide problems, 'HJY is in a good position. They are sitting on a trove of great 90s and 2000s tracks. I hope they introduce such songs in coming days.

Money talks, look at Matty, well over 60 and no plans to stop. Not sure what kind of hours the others work but Matty is golfing by noon most days too.

With Charles being such an outspoken guy who cuts to the chase, I'm surprised he hasn't lost patience with Clear Channel. I suppose since he's up there in years and is making the big bucks he can just ride it out. I predict when he leaves it'll be his decision.

In many ways, Charles does not tow the company line. A few years back - I think when Arlene was fired - I remember him advocating, on air, for the unionization of jocks. I am sure that CC did not like that. In addition, he is an outspoken liberal, working for a company that employs many conservative talkers.

if anyone retired, I wouldn't be surprised if Frankie V., or my old co-worker Mikey V. came home to the airwaves, or Joey Brooks, Jackson, Shawn Tempesta, Jadd, etc...i'm racking my brain trying to think of females though!
