One thing that was sort of wrong. In Atlanta TBS Superstation was not a cable channel but a local channel there. Down in Atlanta the station was still called Channel 17 - TBS 17, Superstation 17, 17 Superstation, etc. Their calls were WTBS TV Channel 17 Atlanta. Channel 17 and TBS would seperate in 2004. But back then the Superstation was a local station for Atlanta. One thing TBS did to influence popularity of a show. Back in the 70's, Leave It To Beaver no longer tested well and was not airing in many markets. But Channel 17 then called WTCG, aired it and it did okay on Channel 17. Then when WTCG 17 went on satellite and nationwide via cable, Leave It To Beaver became a highly requested show and as a result it turned up on many more local stations in the 1980's. In Chicago when a low budget operation WSNS 44 stopped running entertainment in 1981, including Leave It To Beaver, WGN 9 Chicago, which also becae a national superstation also picked it up. WGN 9 and National WGN began breaking up in 1990 parts of the day eventually becoming 2 different channels as well.

Yes - Channel 5 WAGA still had Wheel and Jeopardy. But they did not renew and these shows moved stations later in 1995. But that was to have happened even without the Fox/New World Deal. SCI Broadcasting filed bankruptcy and Ron pearlman and his company invested SCI out of bankruptcy in early 1993. The company SCI was renamed New World and one of the decisions made was to spend far less on programming. That meant stations not renewing Oprah (a couple stations had that), and expensive shows. This also meant acquiring first run barter syndicated shows that cost no money to have. Also part of the New World Deal with Fox was that New WOrld and Fox would both produce together Gabrealle and Mark Walberg as well as continuing to produce Gordon Elliott. Fox would keep syndicating Gordan while New World would syndicate Gabrealle and Mark. Both Fox O & O's and New World stations would run these 3 shows occupying 3 hours of programming a day. The New World Stations would have just 2 hours of Fox Shows. Fox Kids would not occupy any of the New World stations with a couple exceptions. So that is only 5 hours a day of time filled by Fox and New World. New World Stations would have 4 hours of news mornings, an hour at Noon, 2 hours in the evening, an hour at 9 or 10 PM and repeat of that hour late night. That leaves 14 hours occupied and the remaining 9 hours would be nearly all barter alsong with a couple sitcoms and drama shows that would be low cost.

When Fox bought New World, though they did not add Fox Kids (by then Fox was debating ending it and how and when to do that) they did begin acquiring stronger shows for the former New World Stations and by 1998 most New World stations had stronger shows. Also by 1998 the joint syndicated shows were history anyway.

Boy, I bet CBS was really pleased with WGNX not running a local newscast. It took the station a few years, from what I know, and even to this day (now WGCL), it comes in fourth place in the Nielsens. I suspect the order of finish among the Big Four was exactly the same as today: WSB on top by leaps and bounds, WAGA second because of longevity, WXIA third no matter how hard it tried, and WGNX literally not in the running. Even though Atlanta's population has turned over numerous times through the decades, it is so uncanny that things stay the same in this department. Even in these times of flux, a station's reputation DOES matter, no matter what the experts say.

I think WAGA and WXIA are pretty much neck in neck for 2nd place these days.

WGN must have been one of the first stations to air two of the same 30 min. show back to back,
which is almost standard today.

Then again, CBS tried to get a newscast on its new Detroit O&O, WWJ-TV ch.62, but without success.

They actually had it in prime time where you were? In my area, it was only on during the wee hours. This was a very short-lived version of The Price is Right that didn't even last a whole season. It was hosted by Doug Davidson, and did feature a lot of pricing games played on The "regular" Price is Right, and I remember the Showcase featured a rangefinder just like the one they use on Range Game.

In the Tampa Bay area, WFLA carried it at 4PM, pairing it with the half-hour new Dawson "Family Feud". Unfortunately, the shows could not compete against Oprah, which was on WTVT at the time.

For this version, three contestants came on down directly to the stage to play a pricing game. The Showcase Showdown featured "The Price WAS Right", in which the three contestants bid on the price of an item featured in a vintage commercial. (Some shows featured the Big Wheel, like the CBS show.) The one-person Showcase was played like Range Game.

They had an 11pm news, it seems? They also had a preexisting news department that produced a 10pm news. I bet they were still in the process of expanding over there.
