WRCB Ch. 3 Chattanooga (NBC)

9:00 AM Steve Allen

I didn't know that Steve Allen had a talk show in daytime during the early 1970's.

WAGA Ch. 5 Atlanta (CBS)

1:00 Famous Jury Trials

Were these re-enactments of court trials?

WTCG (WTBS/soon WPCH) Ch. 17 Atlanta (CBS)

4:00 Gomer Pyle USMC (a show that WAGA didn't carry, Gilligan's Island (which later would be a TBS standby) aired instead)

Steve had a daily syndicated talk show from 1968
until about 1972. Channel 2 in Atlanta, in the late
'60s, carried it once a week, on Saturday afternoons.

Famous Jury Trials was the television version of a
popular 1940s radio show, only taped in Canada.
It did re-enact famous trials, usually one trial taking
several days to complete. If you remember either
CBS's The Verdict Is Yours or ABC's Day In Court,
you get the idea.

You'll notice quite a few shows pre-empted by either
WSB or WAGA on Channel 17's schedule that day:
Gomer Pyle and Merv Griffin were pre-empted by WAGA.
Jeopardy!, Who, What Or Where, NBC's 12:55 newscast,
and NBC's movie were pre-empted by WSB.

A year or so later, Turner had five NBC shows on his
schedule (IIRC, they were Jeopardy!, Who, What Or Where,
Banacek, Madigan, and Cool Million), and he had billboards
all over Atlanta: "The NBC Network Moves to Channel 17"
with the five shows listed. NBC threatened to sue, since
WSB was still its affiliate at the time, and the billboards
came down (Turner tried to take ABC away from Channel 11
as well, but ABC didn't want to be on UHF).

One CBS show not carried by WAGA or Channel 17 (indeed,
not carried by several Southern stations) was Where The
Heart Is; at the time, many Southern station managers thought
the show just a bit too sexy. That show was replaced in 1973
by The Young And The Restless. Missing on Channel 11 is
A World Apart, but I think that was due to poor ratings.
