Though not for long, as earlier, 17 snatched a popular show from channel 36's hands:

12 N Now Explosion

Channel 36 went dark sometime in 1971; word has it that its ratings tumbled after 17 stolen "The Now Explosion" from them.

I don't know that that one program made the
difference between success and failure on 36.
I do know that 36's owner, U.S. Communications,
was in deep financial trouble by 1971 and shut
down all its stations that year. As a result, 17
went from fifth of five to fourth of four, then got
two extra boosts by the end of the year, courtesy
of Channel 11.

The first came when ABC forced 11 to pick up the
network news; Ted Turner scheduled "Star Trek"
at 6 PM and found out what 11 had known for years:
there was an audience not disposed to watch news
at that time.

The second was when Turner took wrestling away
from 11. Supposedly Turner had an "in" because he
had been romantically involved with a woman who
worked for the promotion, but 11 had angered the
promoters by switching the time slot around; traditionally,
wrestling came on at 6 or 6:30 on Saturdays but in the
late '60s 11 had moved it to 10:30 PM. Turner was able
to put it at 6 and the rest is history.
