5 PM Happy Days Again

WXIA Ch. 11 (NBC)
5 PM Laverne & Shirley & Company

Was it normal around this time to have these two "sister sitcoms" airing opposite each other in the same market? I imagine there was no "Oprah/Dr. Phil-esque" agreement written up by Paramount when syndication started...

Apparently not. Before the switch, Chs. 2 and 11 had
a similar situation with "The Bionic Woman," which aired
on Ch. 2 from 4-5; and "The Six Million Dollar Man" on
Ch. 11, 4:30-5:30.

It's happened in two other markets that I know of: Chicago and Baltimore. During this same this same timeframe in Chicago, Laverne & Shirley aired on WGN, Happy Days was on WFLD; in Baltimore, Happy Days was on WBAL, Laverne & Shirley on WMAR. We would have to go back through the listings, but it wouldn't be surprising if they aired directly-opposite each other in these markets.

9:30 Gimme A Break!

This was the pilot episode of "Gimme a Break" which aired that evening. The first episode is on YouTube (I'm linking just to part 1 only):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL_XR8toeRs

An interesting footnote to this show - the fall preview issue of TVG noted the three kids were Katie, Samantha, and Matt.

It would be about 5 more years before a "Matt" was added to "Gimme a Break"--Matthew Lawrence (Joey's little brother) in its final season (1986-87). This was when the show moved to NYC and the girls were essentially no longer in the cast--and had essentially become the "Joey Lawrence Show." Interestingly, Matthew Donovan was the name of Matthew Lawrence's character.
