The listings for WBZ-TV included a noontime children's show hosted by Bob Emery. He was one of the biggest stars of early children's television when he hosted "The Small Fry Club" from 1946 to the early 50s on New York's WABD (now WNYW) and the DuMont Network. He would have remained a national star for many years ahead--but he missed New England and never felt comfortable in Manhattan, so he came back to WBZ to complete a long career in children's programming that started with radio in the 1920s.

Bob Keeshan, the creator and star of CBS' Captain Kangaroo, began working in local children's TV in New York at WABC in the early 50s while Emery was on DuMont..and often said that Emery was a major influence because of the way he showed he cared about and respected his young viewers. (Fred Rogers also cited Emery as an early influence as he began his own career in Pittsburgh, which was DuMont's strongest market.)

Now I am more stumped then ever.

I am positive I was in the audience of a variety show channel 7 did at noon (M-F) on Patriots Day of 1961. The Sox had been rained out and WNAC-TV people were asking people to go into the Buckminster Hotel for the live show. I was pretty certain the show was hosted by a Dave Allen but Donna Halper couldn't find anything.

However I got a message from Roy Leonard who said

I remember the Dave Allen Show well. I was his Ed McMahon - the announcer for the show. Very talented guy but at the wrong station at the wrong time.

Patriots Day was still on the 19th in the 60's - However it looks like the Red Sox were rained out on the 19th in both 1961 and 1965. If anyone had a record for April of 1965 could they check for a Dave Allen show.Thanks.

...I assume this would not be the same Dave Allen, the Irish comedian who pioneered late-night TV in Australia in the mid-'60s and shortly afterwards went to London and hosted the blackout comedy Dave Allen At Large for the BBC, which in turn was syndicated in the USA starting circa 1978...

Check the May 1, 1964 listings I posted yesterday. Dave Allen is listed at 12 noon. I'm not sure how long his show lasted.

I found 2 other references to Dave Allen - one was in Billboard dated February 1965 saying that he was starting a singing career (and was formerly with WNAC TV and radio - not sure that was accurate) and had recently performed at the Frolic on Revere Beach, and the other was from the 2/27/64 edition of the Wilmington Town Crier. WNAC had just moved their tower to Newton, and the article listed many channel 7 shows that could be seen with better clarity, including the David Allen Show weekdays at 11:30a. I can't find anything for him after the Billboard listing.
