Look at all those local color shows on WHDH-TV 5. Guess their TK-41s
really got a workout!

WNAC-TV 7 had "News - Roy Leonard" at 6:15 PM. Was this the Roy Leonard
who was later at WGN-TV Chicago for a long time?

And WMUR-TV 9...I know it was Richard Eaton, et al, but no clearance of any
ABC prime time on Friday evening?

WHDH had a full color plant from day one. They had hopes of getting the NBC affiliation (which didn't happen due to their licence situation) - hence the TK-41s.

Yes that's the same Roy Leonard. He started at WHDH but went to WNAC after he was asked to play Bozo. He left WNAC towards the end of 1967, with the demise of the Yankee Network.

As for WMUR my guess is that they didn't clear ABC prime time because WHDH came in loud and clear in southern New Hampshire. WNAC had a much weaker signal at the time, and they started clearing more after the switch.

Ray Harris was the PD at WMUR-TV when I worked there in the late 60's and he told me the story.

Eaton was exploring making the station a Boston independent and selling it to Storer. However Storer would not buy it unless Eaton moved the transmitter closer to Boston. A location in Georgetown, MA was selected and WMUR tried to sell the FCC they could cover southern NH just as well from there but Washington just laughed Eaton out of the hearing room.

Eaton also saved money by not using AT&T Long Lines from Waltham to Uncanoonuc Mountain.

WMUR had major signal problems as most NH homes pointed their antennas towards Needham/Newton and Uncanoonuc was due west. WMUR to solve the problem had a translator on channel 13 in downtown Manchester.

BTW - if anybody has WNAC-TV from April 1961 it would be a huge help to me.

Richard Eaton was cheap and his GM Sam Phillips was even cheaper. But even in 1970 Eaton and Phillips thought their cable system in Manchester (United Cable) was where the money would be in the future. I believe they sold it the same time the family sold WMUR.

So how did WMUR-TV get the ABC feed?

Was it an OTA pickup of WHDH-TV? (Yes, cheap!) Or a microwave link?

WMUR used AT&T Long Lines BUT master control had to call in to Boston to let them know when we were using it for billing.
