This was the debut night of WBZ-TV, Boston's first TV station. WNAC-TV (Channel 7) would join it within two weeks, as a primary CBS and secondary ABC affiliate. Boston remained a two station market until noncommercial WGBH (channel 2) signed on in 1955, and WHDH-TV (channel 5) made its debut in 1957.
