Retro: Central Florida, Sunday, May 8, 1960

I picked this date as it's when my youngest sister was born, and while it's not our home stomping grounds of SoCal, it is where we had some relatives. Sources: St. Petersburg Times, Ocala Star-Banner (via Google News Archive).

Noticed in the description of "The Ed Sullivan Show" the names Noonan and Marshall;
they were Tommy Noonan and Peter Marshall (yes, the master of "The Hollywood Squares").
You may have run across a movie they made in 1959, an Army comedy called "The Rookie."

When Merrill Heatter was looking for a host for "Squares" (Bert Parks hosted the pilot
but was not at his best), he approached Marshall after seeing him on a Kellogg's cereal
commercial. Marshall had done a short-lived local game show in LA and was reluctant
to do a network game show. So Heatter approached Dan Rowan. When Marshall heard
about this, he very strongly convinced Heatter to give him the job. The reason? When
Noonan was on his deathbed, Rowan had said some uncomplimentary things about him
that didn't sit well at all with Marshall, and Marshall was determined to hurt Rowan every
way he could. Didn't quite work out that way, or have we all forgotten "Laugh-In"?

From what I recollect, Dan Rowan was not a very pleasant chap to work with.
