I see that ch 8 carried "Password" at 2pm (pre-empting DOOL! unless they time shifted). These were reruns, possibly the first 5-day-a-week game show to go into reruns. I had no idea that it went into reruns so soon after CBS axed it.

I believe that Wesley Hyatt said that it was a daring move to go into reruns, but it paid off for Goodson/Todman. (WTVJ 4 Miami carried the reruns too, but I don't think it was so soon.) "Password" returned to new shows on ABC in 1971.

I just thought of this!!.........."Snap Judgment" was still running on NBC, and the entire original rules were overhauled in favor of using the "Password" format late in its run. I think Hyatt said that started in Dec 1967. So, this makes "Password" reruns at this time all the more unusual to me!

Unless of course, this was a misprint!!

No misprint; CBS had just canceled "Password" and WFLA obviously
wanted to cash in on the show's popularity on WTVT by airing it at
the same time it had been on CBS. (A couple of years later WFLA
aired "Allen Ludden's Gallery" at the same time.) "Days Of Our Lives"
aired briefly in the Bay Area when it first went on the air in 1965, IIRC,
but didn't become a permanent part of Ch. 8's daytime lineup until the
early '70s; it was being carried there when I moved to Tampa in '73.

WTVJ's then-sister station, WLOS, also carried "Password," first at
7 PM, then at 11 AM (when they put "To Tell The Truth" and then
"Truth Or Consequences" at 7) until the ABC episodes began airing.
Again, IIRC, WLOS carried the entire ABC run of "Password."

Remember this is also the time when Fred Silverman was trying to
establish an all-soap block on CBS from 11:30 AM-4 PM (1-1:30 excepted);
he had replaced "Password" with "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing," and the
following year would replace "To Tell The Truth" with "Secret Storm" at 3 (a
mistake on two counts: CBS bought the show from American Home Products
and proceeded to write out or scale back many of the most popular characters),
and move "House Party" to 4 ("Guiding Light" moving to 2:30), where it suffered
from a number of affiliate pre-emptions and a change in emphasis following the
death of Art Linkletter's daughter Diane. (Remember that Silverman hated game
shows; on the set of "Password" one day he asked, "Who thinks up all this c**p?",
and it took only slightly less than an act of Congress to get him to put "Family Feud"
on ABC.)

Well then, I wonder if reruns of "Password" were temporarily withdrawn, when NBC's "Snap Judgment" decided to go Password on the public. It would seem like a conflict. I am looking at the Hyatt book here. SJ adopted the Password format on Dec. 23, 1968, and was canceled on Mar. 27, 1969; so I am wondering if any station was airing Password reruns during this period.

I believe that the reruns (which were color-only, BTW) were still going strong in summer 1969....I was 10, and my folks and I were on vacation then, and we had KTLA in L.A. on the motel's cable system in New Mexico, IIRC, and KTLA (or was it another indie?) had Password.

(Trivia: WTVJ was running Password reruns originally at 4:25p as I guess The Linkletter Show was 25 min. long. At 4:55pm was Perry mason reruns, then WTVJ favorite "Weaver the Weatherman" anchored in his 5:55 daily show. Then, whatever was running at 4pm extended to 30 minutes, and WTVJ heavily edited "Password" to 25 minutes. Wouldn't it have been easier to edit an hour-long Perry Mason than a half hour Password? Maybe Silverman was a consultant on WTVJ.)

Keep in mind that Les Moonves hates (or hated, anyway) game shows. He made some comment when CBS aired Dick Clark's "Winning Lines" after "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" became an ABC hit. Can't remember the quote from Les, but it was akin to "throwing a bone" to game show fans.

Of course, this shown when GSN was running reruns of the color Password, when a "Password" logo suddenly appears as Allen Ludden was about to throw it to a commercial. In addition, the sponsors plugs at the end was replaced with a but featuring Allen talking about the stars appearing on "Password".
