Is it correct to assume they picked up ABC off the air from some other station? Otherwise they wouldn't have delayed Bewitched to run "Film" at noon.

With so much bartered programming these days, I sometimes forget how little of it there used to be. Some of these small stations really had to struggle to fill non-network time.

My guess that station would had been Washington's then WMAL-TV since back in those days the DC stations had translators all over Virginia ( some old timers still to this day believe that the entire state of Virginia should fall within the Washington DC market but that is for a another post for another time, think of Norfolk's WAVY's Bruce Rader for example). Lynchburg's WLVA would had been closer but still I would be surprised that if it would had been them who had feed programs to WRFT..

One station it would NOT had been would be WSVA..they had received their ABC from not only DC's WMAL but sometimes even Baltimore's WJZ as well.

10:30 Mike Douglas (co-host is weight-control specialist
Irwin Stillman; guests are James Coco, singer Julie
DeJohn, comic Pat Cooper)

Dr. Stillman was the Water Diet guy, right? Eat what you want in moderation, but drink 8 glasses of water a day...I have to go to the bathroom just from typing this!

Best description ever of Pat Cooper was on one of those Comedy Central roasts: "Back in the 60s, our next speaker was the p***ed off young comedian on the Ed Sullivan show...Today, he's the p***ed off old comedian on the Howard Stern show!"

I believe Dr. Stillman was the water-diet guy; I do remember
Merv Griffin trying the Stillman approach to weight loss and
saying he hated it. All of Mike's co-hosts that week were
medical people; the others were Lendon Smith (Tuesday),
veterinarian Worth Lanier (Wednesday), Dr. David Reuben of
"Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex" fame
(Thursday), plastic surgeon Thomas Baker (Friday).

Do you have anymore of those Central Virginia schedules but maybe from the 1980s? I would like to see them. Thank you!!!!

Could it have been WXEX(now WRIC) from Richmond, VA?

Most likely, WRFT was recieving it's ABC programing via WGHP in High Point, which would have been the closest ABC affil, other than WLVA (WSET). A comparison of the two schedules above would seem to confirm that. They certainly would not have recieved a feed from WMAL (WJLA) since that station also owned direct competitor WLVA. I never heard of WMAL (WJLA) operating translators in VA. BTW, from what I've read, WRFT originally recieved it's ABC programing directly from AT&T. When they were unable to deliver the agreed upon number of households to ABC, the net stopped it's direct feed and stopped paying the station to air it's programs. This is apparently what led to channel 27's eventual demise. 27 did pretty well within Roanoke Co, but this was just too small a part of the total DMA to be in any way competitive. WRFT did quite a bit of low budget local programming in an attempt to being an alternative to WDBJ and WSLS--some of it you see reflected here. I don't think it was really much like the famous WAIM, even though they both had to contend with another ABC station in the area on channel 13.
