Those local editorials were a wonderful thing. Too bad so many good things, like the practice of editorials and equal time and the Television Code are long gone.

Those local editorials were a wonderful thing. Too bad so many good things, like the practice of editorials and equal time and the Television Code are long gone.

Of course, the NAB TV Code was ended as the government determined that it constituted violations of the Sherman Anti-Turst Act due to its restrictions on the quantity, length and certain content in advertising. The NAB agreed to a consent decree in 1982, and the code, now stripped of its principal pillar and subject to scrutiny in its other aspects, soon died.

And the result has been lower quality television, IMO. Of course the demise of the Code was not the only reason for this. While I lament a lack of antitrust enforcement, and related court decisions (The recent decision involving AT&T/Warner was judicial misconduct), in this case, I believe the case was ill conceived and should not have been brought.
