WKEF's 6:30 am "newscast" at the time was simply a long-form weather forecast. Sinclair was much too cheap to expand WKEF's news department at the time, and only did three newscasts: 6pm, 10pm on WRGT, and 11pm.
 
Did Sinclair have WKEF by 1998? I worked there briefly in 1996 and they were still separate from 45 then.I seem to remember an hour newscast at 6am but could be wrong. With WHIO 7 being the behemoth it was and still is in news, and WDTN making inroads, WKEF was the "little station that sorta could".

Yeah, WKEF and WRGT merged operations by 1998. NBC News at Sunrise aired at 6am and a longform weather forecast aired before The Today Show. It was gone by 2002, my schedules reflect Martha Stewart Living, First Business and later infomercials airing in that slot.
