This may be the movie with Henry Fonda,
made around 1939.

B. Patrick thought:

It may have also been a 1930 movie, which starred Walter Huston as President Lincoln. It was the first (and maybe the only??) feature-length "talkie" directed by pioneer silent film producer and director D.W. Griffith.

Given that this is 1950, a 1939 movie would be mighty recent.
I'm inclined to believe you're right on this one. I hadn't
even thought about the Walter Huston one; I was thinking, I
believe, about "Abe Lincoln in Illinois."

The saga of Milk sounds like something the BBC would have showed on National Lampoon's European Vacation ;D
