4 13 NFL Football
Return: The San Francisco 49ers meet the Miami Dolphins in an exhibition game in London. This is the third annual American Bowl. Sunday afternoon, yard work done, sprawled in an easy chair with cold drink in hand, watching pro football's finest battle it out on the gridiron-it's an American institution. But will it play in England? Scandinavia, maybe? Well, how about Asia? The NFL's efforts to increase interests (and TV revenues) have reached global proportions. Much of this expansion is due to an enthusiastic reception in London, where previous games have sold out easily and helped to launch hundreds of semipro teams. On Aug. 14, the leageue premieres in continental Europe when the Bears neet the Vikings in Sweden; and there is talk of games in Japan (or other Asian sites) as early as 1989. Closer to home, the NFL invades Canada (for the first time since '69) for an Aug. 18th Browns-Jets game in Montreal. Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen report.

Two things on this schedule are already on their last legs:
Non-evangelical (Catholic, Lutheran, etc.) discussion shows and playlets like "Insight" and "With This Ring" (which was apparently produced in Detroit). They were already being driven out in many markets by televangelists; maybe thirty stations were airing "For Our Times", the last network religious program.
Sunday morning kids' programming. In case you wonder what "Steampipe Alley" was, it was WOR's version of "Double Dare". I saw it every Sunday as a kid, but had totally forgotten about it until today.

Not just Double Dare, but it also had celebrity guests and Looney Tunes cartoons. Probably one of the last local, over-the-air children's TV programs. Ranger Charlie & Rosco (on KSTW Tacoma/Seattle) was another example of a local children's TV show in the late 1980s/early 90s.
Speaking of Double Dare, notice WWOR aired the bad ripoff "Slime Time" at 8AM ET. Three students and one teacher from a school played in teams to win prizes, and yes, some got slimed. Only lasted 13 weeks before it was off the airwaves, never to be seen again (same with Treasure Mall).

You mean to tell me that WIHT/31 was only on the air from 8:30 am to 10 am? Kind of unusual for a 1988 TV listing. What's going on, here?

I think the rest of WIHT's day was used for subscription TV (In Home Theatre).
