AOR was a lot more eclectic in those days. WRIF was not a strictly "hard rock" station in that era. They played the Bee Gees and Donna Summer at the height of disco era, because they were big selling album as well as single artists. You'd just hear the long LP versions of their hits instead of the single edits. WRIF was part of the ABC chain at the time and I believe WPLJ in NYC and WDAI in Chicago were similar.
Really, if you go through the old playlist reports of Walrus magazine on David Eduardo's site, you might be surprised at some of the stuff AOR stations were playing then. WMMR and WNEW-FM even playlisted the first Muppet Show album!
