- Was KTBS' double-run of Joey Bishop a rerun of the show just broadcast?

- The only CBS programming on KLTV was Dallas Cowboys games.

According to Longview News Journal and probably Tyler Morning Telegraph (in which a majority of channels were Dallas/Ft. Worth and Tyler listings) some of them were pre-empted. KTBS, however, had to cutaway from Joey Bishop to air their news and then resume programming. Dallas Cowboys football is not the only CBS offering KLTV gave us during their three-affiliate commitment. The only other shows aired from CBS were in the daytime, Love of Life while primetime offerings from that network would include Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres and probably Mayberry RFD. The last primetime CBS offering KLTV aired as I recall was Sandy Duncan's sitcom called Funny Face which later became The Sandy Duncan Show. Dallas Cowboys football from CBS and sometimes on NBC would continue until KLMG (now KFXK) came on the scene leaving KLTV with ABC (their primary since the network generated killer ratings in the 70s) and NBC. So as some of us East Texas TV historians will tell you, KLTV since their incision in 1954 had to cherry-pick the programs from the three networks and DuMont which had limited choice in programming to choose from. The Shreveport stations, however had to cherry-pick their programs until 1960. KTAL (formerly KCMC) was a CBS affiliate with secondary from NBC and ABC. KSLA was CBS primary with NBC/ABC/DuMont affiliation and KTBS was NBC with ABC secondary.

If I had the TV Guide magazine from that era, it would really spell the whole schedule out entirely.

'78-'83, KLTV would carry Houston Oilers games from NBC, unless there was a conflict with the Cowboys. The Tyler Rose, Earl Campbell, made the Oilers second only in popularity to the Cowboys.

KLTV also most likely carried Oilers games from CBS (if they were hosting an NFC team and no conflict with the Cowboys) prior to the 1983 season, although I don't particularly remember watching CBS Oilers games on KLTV. KLMG went on the air with CBS in September 83, so KLTV would have lost all rights to CBS football starting in the 83 season.

It would be understandable if KLTV carried Sandy Duncan's show, as she was a local talent (from Henderson originally, parents lived in Tyler for many years (her dad ran a gas station there) and Sandy got her first acting classes and experience while attending junior college at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville (Duncan is one of that college's biggest alums)). Later on, Sandy would be seen on local screens in The Hogan Family as then-new NBC station KETK/56 came along during the show's second season, around the time Duncan replaced the departed Valerie Harper.

I remember back when I heard about there being another station in the market that would air CBS shows and--the big thing--take KLTV's Dallas Cowboy games gravy train (and their stranglehold on the market) away. If you could have seen poor KLMG back then, well, it was kind of sad to see the result of such a monumentous event in local TV history there, as it took Ch.51 many years (and a couple of bankruptcies) to get their ducks in a row, for the most part.

I didn't get to see all the cherry-picking, but I do remember KLTV carrying not only the CBS Cowboys games, but many of NBC and ABC's daytime schedule offerings, especially prior to some of the long-running soaps expanding to an hour long. As a result, a few of the soaps aired out of a recognizable pattern, but it made for an interesting lineup, to be sure.

Actually KLMG came on in the fall of '84.

I was with KLTV at the time and was the master control operator for many Sundays with an NBC Oilers game at Noon and a CBS Cowboys game at 3-ish (we would let the Oilers game finish before switching to CBS).

We would occasionally pick up another game from NBC if there wasn't a Cowboys game, up to and including the Super Bowl. I don't recall running other CBS games when I was there, but KLTV/KTRE probably ran the Super Bowl in 1982 .

By the time I was there, we didn't run ANY other programming from CBS, which meant for every network promo that CBS aired, I had to find a PSA to substitute. You'd be surprised how few 20 second promos were available. For NBC games, we ran a lot of Letterman promos and a few PSAs to cover the network promos. (Our only NBC programs at that point were Letterman, Football and NBC News at Sunrise.)

After KLMG came on in 84, we often ran 2 NBC games on Sunday afternoons.

Yep, newsmark, you are correct. KLMG came on in Sept 84, not 83. Did KLTV continue carrying NBC NFL games until KETK came on? I believe KETK came on in 87.

Seeing the OP's list of the 4 channels that I grew up with - 3, 6, 7, 12, reminds me of the old "East Texas Special" antenna that almost everyone in Longview had on their homes. It was a VHF antenna that you pointed at Mooringsport/Vivian for 3, 6, and 12, and it was custom tuned to receive 7 from the back as the old KLTV tower at 31 and the loop in east Tyler was nearly 180° opposite from the Shreveport stations.
