Interesting that there were no UHF stations in that area then. Or could it be that the edition of TV Guide for that region just wasn't listing them?

Did Marshal Dillon (CBS, Tue 7:30/6:30) have clearance problems in other regions too?

Did Andy Williams alternate with Bell Telephone Hour in the Tue 10/9 slot on NBC?

No, there weren't any UHFs in eastern Iowa then. The first was in 1970, KDUB/40 in Dubuque. There was one UHF in Iowa in 1964, KQTV/21 in Ft. Dodge, NBC affiliate.

The stations I listed were the eastern half of those in the Sunday Des Moines Register.

But you wouldn't have to drive too far from eastern Iowa to run into a plethora of U's--just by crossing the Mississippi into Illinois and the all-U market in Peoria as well as those in Springfield (WICS-20), Decatur (the then-WTVP 17--now WAND with the WTVP calls now on Peoria's PBS affiliate), and in Rockford (WTVO then broadcasting on channel 39 before later moving to 17 around 1966 or so).

Do you have the western Iowa listings from the Register? Their old TV section always fascinated and interested me any times I've seen it.

This great tribute website to Quad Cities TV history includes an article on WHBF's legendary "Grandpa Happy" show, the early years of WQAD--which at the time of this listing had only been on the air 6 1/2 months (Aug. 1, 1963) and had also immediately acquired the local Romper Room rights, and "Captain Ernie," the successor to the forementioned "Captain Vern" show on WOC. Lots of nuggets of QC media history that one could spend hours browsing:

5:00 Leave It To Beaver
5:30 CBS News

The Beaver was still a late-afternoon fixture on WHBF's syndicated daytime lineup well into the early 1980s--as these past schedules from eastern Iowa and western Illinois from 1980 and 1982 posted in the past on this board (some by me) indicate, as well as personal recollection on my part (growing up about a half-hour northwest of Peoria and within reception range of both sets of Peoria and QC stations):

http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=91734.0 (Feb. 8, 1980--Peoria and the Quad Cities)

http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=172582.0 (July 27, 1982--Iowa)

http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=50278.0 (Oct. 7, 1982--Peoria and QCs)

"Marshal Dillon" does appear to have had some clearance problems
nationally. I have a 1962 Atlanta TV Guide, and none of the three
CBS affiliates (WAGA, WDEF, WMAZ) carries the show; likewise, a
1963 North Carolina issue shows only WBTV carrying it.

I was slightly surprised to see the number of stations carrying Lee
Phillip; I suppose that's because she was based in Chicago and was
probably fairly well-known in the Midwest (I posted a Kentucky listing
recently which showed her in Cincinnati, although on the ABC, not the
CBS, station); the closest station to me that carried her was WTVR
Richmond, none in North Carolina carried her.

And before anyone asks, ABC carried reruns of "Father Knows Best"
at 11:30 AM (CT), which explains the "Robert Young" listing at that
time on ABC stations.

Yes, I'll post them once I get a chance to type them up. The rest of the Register listings include Des Moines, Ft. Dodge, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Omaha, and St. Joseph.
