Interviews with artists and imaginative film techniques show how artists have expressed the American image, in paintings and photographs, from the time of Colonial painters John Singleton Copley and Gilbert Stuart to Andrew Wyeth, Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol. Historic films and footage of present-day American life serve as counterpoint to the artists' vision. E.G. Marshall's narration is supplemented by poetry and folk songs that also reflect the American image. Filmed at artists' studios, New York's Whitney Museum of American Art and private galleries.
