The 28 who accepted invitations to play in this 72-hole, medal-play event teed off Thursday on the 7073-yard, par-72 course. Heading the field were defending champion Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Doug Sanders and Jerry Barber, who holds a record low of 268 for this tournament. Total prize money is in excess of $50,000, with the winner receiving 10,000 silver dollars.
