Well, THIS is a big head-scratcher! I can't speak for pre June 1978, when our family relocated to Cape Girardeau, but at that point, WPSD 6 did not carry SNL at all. It wasn't until early 1979 before 6 picked it up, but then delayed an hour.

So I guess they DID carry it in pattern at the beginning? Something then must've happened, i.e. a skit that rubbed management the wrong way. I was under the impression that was never seen on WPSD prior to 1979!

3 7 American Bandstand
Appearances by Alan O'Day ["Undercover Angel," "Angie Baby"] and Shalamar ["Uptown Festival," "Oh, Baby Baby"].

Shalamar was a creation of Don Cornelius and the "Soul Train" machine (a couple of the members, including Jody Watley, were former "ST" dancers). I had thought that the group was still somewhat associated with "Soul Train" at the time, so it's surprising to see them on "AB" (especially in the seventies, when there was some bad blood between Cornelius and Dick Clark).

And that episode of "Emergency!" called "All Night Long" aired on NBC saturday evenings was that the very last episode of the weekly tv series before several E! tv movies came back for one more season?

I was only 11 when SNL debuted in 1975, so I am not really old enough to remember for sure. However, I recall them reading (on the air) letters from their "mailbag" in which they were criticized for not carrying SNL. So my guess is that they didn't carry it all (at first), then carried it an hour late (for the better part of 20 years!) as some sort of "compromise." They didn't carry it on time until sometime in the '90s, by which time most of us (myself included) had long since lost interest in SNL.

Shalamar were still associated with Soul Train at this point; the more well-known lineup of Watley, Jeffrey Daniel (who was the originator of the "Moonwalk" dance), and Howard Hewitt didn't form until 1979. In fact, they went through two lead singers (first Gary Mumford, and then Gerald Brown) before Hewitt. Dick Griffey, who was the talent coordinator on Soul Train, and Cornelius' partner in Soul Train Records, had launched SOLAR Records in '77 basically from the ashes of what was Soul Train Records.

After the Soul Unlimited fiasco a few years earlier (it was Dick Clark's answer to Soul Train), Cornelius and Clark would reportedly work together to feature and promote many acts on each other's shows.

I was only disputing the title of the song "Always" only because every single other song listed in Lawrence Welk's setlist for that night had the word "dream" or a derivative of the word "dream" in them. ::)
