I guess the reason for those Carson/Letterman reruns was because Johnny and Dave knew a writers' strike would be imminent. For "Saturday Night Live", the strike hit them really hard as Gilda Radner was tapped to host the season finale; unfortunately, their season ended early and Gilda would die the following year. Last season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- thanks to "The New Adventures of Old Christine" being a hit -- ended the 17-year drought as she became the first female cast member to host SNL.
Now why the Today Show on KTVF? At that time, CBS had the disastrous "The Morning Program" with Rolland Smith (in his first and only national gig), Mariette Hartley, Mark McEwen (who would start a 15-year career with CBS), and -- believe it or not -- BOB SAGET!!! They tried to be a light-hearted alternative to Today or GMA, but it didn't wake up any viewers. Don't forget that the network at the time was in last place behind NBC and ABC.
When CBS decided to restructure their morning show as "CBS This Morning" and make it a serious competitor to those two shows, one person they were going to hire as co-host with Kathleen Sullivan was the CBC's Peter Mansbridge. With the possibility of taking Dan Rather's anchor chair if he did well, Peter was about to sign on the dotted line...until Knowlton Nash, at the eleventh hour, relinquished his anchor position at "The National" and offer it to Mansbridge. Peter took the bait, and the rest as they say was North American television history. In the end, CBS ended the morning job search with Harry Smith.
