Retro: Great Falls, MT Monday, Nov. 11, 1974

Source: Great Falls Pennant (This newspaper was published from 11/9/1974 to 12/19/1974 during a Newspaper Guild strike against the Great Falls Tribune and the newspaper temporarily ceased daily publication).

This is quite an interesting look back into the past of Great Falls television. However, I am having trouble deciphering the listings as it seems rather convoluted and includes stations that either no longer exist or were piped in from out of town. The listing doesn’t, unfortunately, include a breakdown of stations.

KRTV-3 (NBC-CBS, listed as 3-11. 11 is the current Bresnan cable location for this station, but I have no idea if it actually represents a cable position at that point in time)

The Spokane station guesstimates are no doubt just that. Many of the program
listings are Pacific time (left coast feed) plus one hour.

On that clue alone, I would think it's either KSPS Spokane (most-logical, as the system offers other Spokane channels) or KUED Salt Lake City.

Does anyone have listings for around this same period for Spokane or SLC?

As for listings marked "No Listing" -- for the commercial stations, I believe these were network and some syndicated shows that were blacked out locally, due to a "syndex" rule used at the time; it was lifted in the early-1980s, but reinstituted in 1990. As for the PBS station, the "no listing" likely represented in-school programming at the time.

I should have been a bit more clear that "No Listing" is my notation, not the "Pennant"'s.

As I read more into it, I assumed the lack of listings during certain hours were due to black-outs. But I didn't realize Syndex rules applied to network programming, piped in from out-of-market, as well as syndicated programming.

Speaking of labor disputes involving newspapers, what was the main reason for the Great Falls strike? Did it have to do with disagreements with management over the state of the paper? Who was the owner of the main daily paper in Great Falls at the time?

The Great Falls Tribune was, and still is, the only daily in Great Falls. Gannett is its current owner, but I don't know who owned it back then.

If you're wondering why I was asking about the ownership of the Tribune at the time, I'd like to point out that it was known as the only daily paper in the state of Montana that wasn't owned by the Anaconda Mining Company, a relatively large mining conglomerate that ceased to exist in the late 1970s. Before that, in 1959 the company sold all of its newspaper properties to present owner Lee Enterprises.

The paper was owned by Cowles Media from 1965 to Gannett's purchase in 1990. And here's an article I found, published this past year during the Trib's 125th Anniversary. It explains that it was a typical labor dispute, contract negotiations broke down between the two sides and the pressworkers honored the picket line, effectively shuttering the paper until a new contract was put into place.
