10 13 ABC News Closeup
Special: 'Lights, Cameras, Politics'. A lively look at politics as a 'multimillion-dollar...television show.' Using archival footage, the program shows how TV news came into its own at the 1952 conventions; how in the years since it has changed 'what we knew and when we knew it'-and altered the rules of politics, according to writer-reporter Richard Reeves. As the hour shows, one essential rule for candidates in the recent Presidential primaries was: attract media attention. 'In a sense,' says California governor Jerry Brown, 'if [candidates aren't] on television, they are political nonbeings.' 'President Carter,' notes Reeves, 'doesn't have to chase cameras,' but would-be Chief Executives must-by creating "media events". Which candidates get covered-and why-are among the subjects candidly discussed by network-news executives and anchormen Walter Cronkite and Frank Reynolds. The program aso examines the contest among network-news departments for "prestige, profits [and] ratings"; the impact of political commercials (from the 1952 "Man from Abilene" pitch for Dwight Eisenhower to 1980 spots for President Carter and Sen. Edward Kennedy); and the implications for politics of future breakthroughs in video technology.
