Interesting...obviously due to the fact that the U.K. didn't have color broadcast capability until 1967. Was Hullabaloo live or on tape? The British segment had to be on tape, right? I can't imagine NBC booking then-expensive satellite time (Telstar? Relay? Syncom?) for a brief segment in a variety show (not to mention that it would have been 1:30 am in London).

Incidentally, and speaking of satellites, 4/6/65 was also the launch date for Intelsat I ("Early Bird").

I wonder if there was a verbal or on-screen disclaimer during the show so that color viewers wouldn't jump up and start twiddling the dials when the video suddenly went to B&W?

Any other examples of prime-time network shows that were a mix of color and B&W sequences?

Any other examples of prime-time network shows that were a mix of color and B&W sequences?

I seem to remember the network evening newscasts airing some B/W footage from the field after they had gone to color.

I believe Crane did come back to host "Nightlife" briefly before
its cancellation. ABC gave the time back to the affiliates for
about a year and a half before putting Joey Bishop into the
11:30 PM-1 AM slot in the spring of 1967.

As for "Hullabaloo," the show was taped, so no problem with
Brian Epstein's segment airing between 1:30 and 2:30 AM
in England. I don't recall any disclaimer saying that his segment
was not in color, but then again, I was still living in a two-station
market: Raleigh/Durham, where "McHale's Navy"/"Tycoon" aired from
8:30-9:30 on WRAL, and Red Skelton was against them on WTVD.
If I was lucky I could get a snowy picture of "Hullabaloo" on WITN.
(If "Hullabaloo" ever aired on WTVD I wish somebody would let me
know; I've forgotten.)

By the time I got to a three-station market, Greenville/New Bern/
Washington, that fall, "Hullabaloo" had been cut to 30 minutes on
Mondays at 7:30; we had that on WITN, "To Tell The Truth" on WNCT,

But word of mouth does get around: we knew about the "girl in the cage,"
Lada Edmund Jr., even when we couldn't see her.
and "12 O'Clock High" on WNBE (WCTI).
