7:25 Weather (Paula Jane, note the sexism that
they don't use her last name)
...that is, providing Jane isn't actually the woman's last name. And do you believe it's also sexist for Rodger Kent (the AWA wrestling announcer) and Jerry Reed (the musician) to have identified themselves publicly with those names, but their driver's licenses read Rodger Kent Vogel and Jerry Reed Hubbard?...

For the record, her full name is Paula Jane Schultz, as noted in the caption to this flickr photo of a WCPO "Personality Profile", which appears to be taken from a TV Trade magazine in the 1950's..Notice the ad doesnt use her last name, either..

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30457287@N07/2936426838/

To give her credit, though she was a "pretty face" she appeared to actually know her way around a TV studio, as evidenced by her college experience at Ohio University..

I thought it was sexist for the same reason I thought
it sexist that Linda Faye Carson was simply "Linda Faye"
when she was weathergirl on Ch. 11 in Atlanta in the
early '70s, yet all the men used their last names. I
never heard of but one person whose last name was
"Jayne"; that was David Jayne, a longtime figure at
ABC News.

Likewise, in the same era as Linda Faye Carson, Rosemary
Lucas was weathergirl on Ch. 13 in Birmingham and was
never referred to as anything but "Rosemary".

And note I deliberately use the term "weathergirl"--neither
Linda Faye nor Rosemary nor Ch. 11's later weathergirl Gail
Janus nor Ch. 32 in Louisville's Ange Humphrey even pretended
to be meteorologists.

Paula Jane never went by her last-name (which was Schultz) the entire time she was on WCPO-TV. She later married station GM, Mort Watters. They remained married until his death and she still resides in the Cincinnati area. WCPO-TV had other women on-the-air in the early years and all used their last-name: Wanda Lewis, Gail Johnson, Ramona Burnett, Millie Cozart. There was, of course, Dotty Mack whose true last-name was Macaluso. Sexism? I don't think so.

...I just checked the Central/Southwest Tucson residential White Pages (there's another antique concept, heh heh), and there is one listing for a family name of "Jane," and another 14 for the name "Janes." So it may not be common, but they're definitely around. Plus, on the syndicated 1978 sitcom Please Stand By, Marcie Barkin played a newscaster named Vicki Janes, and a continuing gag was about how the local newspapers in New Mexico kept misspelling her name as "Vicki James"...

If Paula Jane chose to be identified that way, there's
nothing I can say about it and I stand corrected on the
sexism issue. If management didn't want her to use her
last name, then it smacks of sexism to me. But that's
just my opinion.

Not to say whether such a thing was "sexist" or not. I have no opinion one way or the other, but it was a different time then..the Women knew how it was going in, and mostly accepted how it was..

I'd mentioned this before, but Longtime Romper Room Teacher Barbara Plummer of WEWS Cleveland, who also moonlighted on occasion as "weathergirl"..Related how she got weather information from her husband, who would call the weather bureau from home, and relay the info to Ms. Plummer, who would then draw the weather maps, etc..

Point taken; it was, after all, 1961 and Betty Friedan hadn't published "The Feminine Mystique". I suppose I'm looking at this thing through 2011 eyes and violating the very thing I tell students: don't impose today's standards on things in the past (perhaps you're aware of the controversy surrounding some of the word changes in "Huckleberry Finn" but that's not for this board); as a teacher I have to be so very careful not to cross that line into perceived racism or sexism so perhaps my internal radar is looking for things like I posted about Paula Jane to begin with. At any rate, Cincinnati viewers apparently accepted it, just as Atlanta viewers accepted Linda Faye and Birmingham viewers, Rosemary, so I suppose I don't have much of an argument.
That's all I have to say about it.

...no problem, don't sweat it. If I came across as terse or testy, my apologies; the Tucson massacre took place just six miles from my front door, and I live literally across the street from the western boundary of Rep. Giffords' district, so everybody in this neck of the woods is a lot less calm nowadays...
