This was about three months before KSTP-5 dropped its NBC affiliation of over thirty years and switched to ABC (which it has been affiliated with ever since).

While ABC (thanks to it's sudden rise from third in the prime-time ratings to first during the 1975/76 TV season) was able to upgrade it's affiliate in many cities, landing KSTP was a coup since KSTP had been one of NBC's strongest stations.

Conversely, it was a huge loss for NBC, which had slipped to third in the prime-time ratings race by 1978.

KSTP's defection probably convinced some CBS and NBC affiliates who were "on the fence" about going to ABC to make the switch.

Didn't KSTP Radio also switch from NBC to ABC's American Information Radio Network at the same time?
