"To Save Our Schools, To Save Our Children." According to a 1983 Presidental commission study, the diminishing quality of America's public-school system makes the U.S. "a Nation at risk." This three-hour assessment by correspondent Marshall Frady explains why U.S. public education gets low marks-and what can be done to raise them. In visits to schools in Arkansas, California, Maryland and Missouri, Frady interviews educators, health-care experts, researchers, parents and students to find out why Johnny and countless other youngsters can't read, write or count well. One reason stems from the fact that more and more mothers work, and are no longer at home to supervise their children's studies. These students, say Frady, often come to school "less motivated, less directed and less prepared to learn." Frady also cites a shortage of competent teachers, particularly in math and science. The good ones, he says, often leave the field because of meager pay, low prestige, heavy workloads and student indifference-factors that can also discourage potential replacements. The program also studies how drug and alcohol abuse-and too much TV watching-impair the learning process; and the problems many schools in poor neighborhoods have with understaffing, overcrowding and inadequate supplies.

You get the feeling KTTV really liked Woody Woodpecker? ::)

Also, how is "M*A*S*H" not cleared on any of the L.A. TV stations, yet it gets a double run on a Palm Springs station?

KTTV had rerun M*A*S*H in prime time a year or two earlier. I looked at some issues of TV Guide (San Diego edition) and found M*A*S*H returned at 7:30 P.M. replacing WKRP which moved to 11:00 P.M. the following September. The station must have been resting it.

Was this a Sesame Street special, or was this an actual episode as part of the regular series? I do know that there was a special called "Don't Eat the Pictures," and I wonder if this is it. If so, this would have been episode #1912.

KTTV, at least during 80s and early 90s, would often rest shows for summer and bring them back for the fall (unless the rights expired).

58 Sesame Street/Metropolitan Museum [special version where the gang is locked up in a museum]

Was this a Sesame Street special, or was this an actual episode as part of the regular series? I do know that there was a special called "Don't Eat the Pictures," and I wonder if this is it. If so, this would have been episode #1912.

It was a prime time special. Here's the description from the Monday listing, 8PM on KCET...

"When the gang gets locked overnight inside the New York art museum. Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus befriend an Egyptian boy who's trying to solve a 4000-year riddle. They ponder it as they look at ancient drawings and the Temple of Dendur, while Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster and others examine and sing about paintings and statues."

Looking back M*A*S*H was on Satudays at 11:00 P.M. June 23, 1984, Sundays at 6:00 followed by WKRP in Cincinati, June 24, and Weeknights at 11:00 P.M. followed by Archie Bunker's Place. All In The Family was on at 1:30 A.M. Both M*A*S*H and All In The Family went into syndication back to back 7:00-8:00 fall 1979.
