At the time, KGBT was CBS primary and KRGV was ABC primary, with both sharing NBC (KRGV became ABC primary in 1976, and apparently, neglected to tell Tel-Aire). KGBT, apparently, felt that the Today show was the better news program than the CBS Morning News. (Notice that they also carried The Tonight Show and The Tomorrow Show.)

KGBT pre-empted "Captain Kangaroo" in order to carry
the "Today" show.

The LRGV didn't get its own NBC affiliate until the 1980s.

Until 1976, the valley did have an NBC affiliate -- KRGV, which was NBC primary and ABC secondary, but when ABC became the top network in the nation, KRGV took ABC as primary, with NBC shared between it and KGBT on a secondary basis.
