2v 8 12 26 27 32 Great Performances
Tosca: Puccini's enduring melodrama. It's set in 1800 Rome, where prima donna Floria Tosca (soprano Raina Kabaivanska) and her love, the painter Mario Cavaradossi (tenor Placido Domingo), become implicated in the escape of a political prisoner. Leading the search for him is the much-feared chief of police Baron Scarpia (baritone Sherrill Milnes), who arrests Mario-and threatens his execution to win the love of Tosca. Puccini's 1900 'verismo' (realistic) work, which is sung in Italian, offers a score of turbulent passions and memorable themes, highlighted by the sonorous tenor aria 'Recondita armonia' and Tosca's moving prayer, 'Vissi d'arte.' This 1976 production was filmed in the actual Roman locales of the opera's libretto. Bruno Bartoletti conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Martin Bookspan is the narrator.

6 11 14 Movie
'Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull's History Lesson.' (1976) Director Robert Altman debunks the heroic legend of William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody (1846-1917). Following his days as a buffalo hunter and Army scout, Cody made a name for himself as a showman, using his Wild West exhibition to perpetuate his frontier fame-and some believe, to mythicize his exploits. As depicted in the film, Cody (played by Paul Newman) is an egocentric figure given to drink, womanizing and exulting his his self-proclaimed role as 'America's National Entertainer.' His show's latest addition is the proud Sioux chief Sitting Bull, who, through a translator, can negotiate like a star. Cody is rankled by the Chief's demands, one in particular: that the planned reenactment of Custer's Last Stand be replaced by a re-created Army slaughter of a Sioux tribe. 'He just wants to show the truth,' says troupe star Annie Oakley. 'I have a better sense of history,' answers Cody. Geraldine Chaplin, Joel Grey.
