A couple of syndicated programs bear the same title as later network shows; I Spy, a syndicated adventure/intrigue show starring Raymond Massey and seen in syndication from 1955 to 1959, had nothing to do with the later NBC show which starred Robert Culp and Bill Cosby starting in 1965. Soldiers of Fortune was an international adventure show which was filmed between 1955 and 1957 and had nothing to do with the later Soldiers of Fortune Inc. produced by Jerry Bruckheimer in the late 1990s.

It was a little over a year from this schedule that there would be one more NYC station to start "going color," outside of WRCA-TV (which became WNBC-TV on May 22, 1960) and WCBS-TV (though after limited colorcasts over the last few years, it wouldn't be until 1965 that the station began airing any local-originated color programming on any basis): WOR-TV, initially through film and slide capacity (RCA TK-26 chains). It was the first NYC indie to have this distinction (WNEW-TV and WPIX didn't follow until 1965).

This is a Thursday schedule, not a Friday one. It caught my
attention when I saw "Playhouse 90" and Groucho listed; they
aired on Thursday nights.

I think the (R) does mean "recommended,"; it doesn't mean
"rerun" because the regular shows would have been in reruns
at that time (regular as opposed to summer replacements), and
I know that the Times listed recommended shows for years.

Actually, it would more denote a rerun (or repeat) of either a TV show episode or even a movie (yes, in those days The Times used to show the umpteenth airing of a film on a TV station as a "R").

It would appear to denote shows that had more detailed highlights in the top middle section of the TV listings (in those days, the listings were in teeny tiny print - it wasn't until July 1964 that the listings layout was revamped and revised, the typesetting set in larger size, and the listings themselves becoming more descriptive.
