WSBK-38 Boston (Was: Re: Retro: Newfoundland (Sunday, December 10, 1995)

WSBK-38 used to be very prevalent on cable systems in Canada because it carried the Boston Bruins from 1967-68 through 2001-2002 (and later broadcast games of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics as well).

From 1969-70 until 1983-84, the station would carry at least 60 regular-season Bruins' games a year (about three-fourths of the team's schedule), often more.

In the 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1981-81, 1982-83, and 1983-84 seasons, WSBK carried about 70 Bruins' regular-season games each year. During those seven seasons, it was rare that a Bruins' game would not be televised.

WSBK also carried at least 95 Red Sox regular-season games a year from 1975 through 1983; in most of those years, over 100 regular-season games would be covered by WSBK. There were a couple of years in the early 1980's when WSBK carried around 120 of the Sox' 162 regular-season games (basically, all but a handful of the away games and about half the home games)

In 1984, the number of games of the Bruins and Red Sox was reduced with the formation of the New England Sports Network (NESN), which WSBK was once a part-owner of. From 1984 through 2000 with the Bruins, and 1984 through 1995 with the Red Sox, WSBK and NESN each split the two teams' schedules (apart from national telecasts) about equally.

For the Bruins after 1984, WSBK did mostly away games (with a handful of home games) while NESN did mostly home games (with a handful of away games). For the Red Sox, WSBK generally did Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while NESN did most of the games during the week.

During the final two years the Bruins were on WSBK, only about 25 regular-season games (usually Saturdays, whether home or away) were on that station with NESN getting the rest (apart from national telecasts).

It's interesting to note that outside of WJBK 2 & WWJ 62, all the Detroit stations were carried in New Foundland EVEN THOUGH it's nowhere near Detroit (Let alone Toledo, OH). You would think the Boston stations would've been there all along. Puzzling.....

Cheers & 73 :D

Boston stations were still another year away...the cableco where I live, EastLink, started carrying ABC/CBS/NBC/PBS from Beantown in late August '96. The Motown stations were bird-fed to Nfld through CANCOM...
