bp, was this before the FCC finally told WTVD to stop cherry-picking so that WRDU would have a fair chance, or afterwards? It would seem that nearly all channel 11's programs were CBS, while channel 28's were nearly all NBC by this point. I would guess, though, that, when WTVD went all-CBS, Today would have gone to WRDU. I don't remember your earlier posts from North Carolina, but it would stand to reason that Today was the last step in a full realignment.

WTVD went all-CBS and WRDU all-NBC in September.
(Just for the record, Birmingham, where an identical situation
had existed in the late '60s, made the changeover on May 31,
1970; WAPI (WVTM) went all-NBC and WBMG (WIAT) all-CBS.)
I suspect that WTVD was just waiting for its contract with NBC
to expire, much as Birmingham's WBRC, although a Fox o&o, stayed
with ABC until its contract expired in 1996. WTVD chose CBS largely
because CBS shows did, and do, better than NBC's in this neck of the
woods; it would stay with CBS until CapCities bought ABC in 1985, making
TVD an ABC o&o and WRAL the new CBS affiliate.
