They're lucky they weren't airing the Senior Bowl - there might have been yet another "Heidi Bowl"... ::)
 
I think there's an error in the "Steve Allen Show" listing
of guest "Tom" Conway. Although his real name is Tom,
I'm sure it's Tim Conway, because he was a regular on
Allen's short-lived 1961-62 ABC series, which this was
(the Triad didn't have an ABC affiliate then, and WFMY
delayed the show from Wednesdays at 7:30 in order
to show "The Alvin Show" from CBS).

I had my suspicions that might have been Tim there...that was TVG's error, not mine :D
 
Re WTVD's "Dance Party": Ty Boyd was the original co-host
with Tonya Gamble; he moved on to WBTV as anchor of their
noon newscast (first called "Noon Report," then "Top O' The Day").
Ken Corbitt played Paul Pioneer on the station's afternoon kids'
show "The Fun Hour" and did the weather at 11 PM. One night
he showed up to do the weather, drunk about as possible as you
can get. I think he was fired the next day; I do recall a new character,
Trader Jake (don't know who played him), on "The Fun Hour".

Also, re "Captain Five" I was on that show twice; the first time Herb
Marks picked me out of the audience, stood me on the organ which
Paul Montgomery played, and interviewed me. I don't know what
happened to Herb Marks, but Montgomery became a legend as Uncle
Paul on WRAL; he gave up the show when the FCC began pressuring the
station to make it more educational. He and Jerry Haynes, Mr. Peppermint
on WFAA's "Peppermint Place", are about the last two local kids'-show hosts
I remember.

If you were a kid in North Carolina in the '60s you were treated to some
wonderful hosts and characters: George Perry (the Old Rebel, WFMY),
Fred Kirby (Rascals Club, WBTV), Brooks Lindsay (Clown Carnival, WSOC),
Bob Gordon (Bob Gordon Theater, WSJS--now WXII), Bill Norwood (Mr. Bill,
WLOS), and WITNey the Hobo (I don't know who played him, but he was--
you guessed it--on WITN), all in addition to Marks and Montgomery. But
then again, I know those of you in other parts of the country have your own
fond memories of local shows like these; pity they're not on anymore.
