So...WWAY theoretically gets the ABC feed full-time, but chooses not to take the feed
(in COLOR) at 7:30, but instead elects to record the show and play it back a week later
in its "live" time slot, while recording the next episode for the week after that.

And even though its VR1100 (or maybe even VR1000) will record in low-band color, it does
not have color playback electronics, so the "why is this a delayed" broadcast airs in B&W!

I don't get it. ???

WBTV Ch. 3 Charlotte (CBS/ABC/NBC)

10:30 Beatles (ABC, COLOR--one cartoon is from
one of their German albums: "Komm, Gib Mir
Deine Hand"; "She Loves You")
...The Beatles only recorded one single, not an album, in German. The two songs were recorded (ironically enough, in Paris) on the same day they recorded "Can't Buy Me Love." One of those sides, "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand," was issued in the U.S. as the last track on Something New by Capitol Records during the Summer of 1964, which is how it popped up on the cartoon. The other, "Sie Liebt Dich," was issued as a single by Swan Records, and it sold badly, barely reaching the Billboard Hot 100; Capitol didn't bother reissuing it in the U.S. until the 1980 compilation Rarities; interestingly, Capitol had issued the single in Canada in 1964...

What were the purpose of stations in New Bern, Washington and Greenville? Couldn't the Raleigh-Durham stations be picked up there and towards more to the east, Hampton Roads? Kinda curious as to how those cities had gotten their own TV stations since if one looks at the map..well they weren't that far away from Raleigh. In the case of Hampton Roads..kinda surprised these stations never tried to take the Outer Banks and Nags Head away from that market and place the region into theirs.

OK, I stand corrected on the Beatles.

I never understood WWAY's practice of airing a show
at the "in-pattern" time but on delay. Another example
is "Where The Action Is," which aired on ABC at 4:30 PM.
WWAY would run the show at 4:30 but be a week or two
behind. No sense to me either.

As for Greenville/New Bern/Washington, WRAL can be picked
up quite well in Kinston, about 70 miles from Raleigh, and that's
about the eastern limit of its coverage area. WTVD and WNCN
probably wouldn't be picked up in Goldsboro, 45 miles away,
without cable. WITN and WNCT are available all over eastern
North Carolina; WCTI fills a gap for ABC in Kinston, New Bern,
Morehead City, Jacksonville, all places where the Hampton Roads
stations couldn't put a signal. WITN and WNCT are available on
cable in Dare County, true, but that's part of the Hampton Roads
market and is a little north and east of those two stations.

Basically, the dividing line between Hampton Roads and Greenville/
New Bern/Washington is Albemarle Sound; if you're to the north,
you're in the Hampton Roads market; to the south you're in Greenville/
New Bern/Washington. If you'll look at a map of eastern North Carolina
you'll find the way the three markets (including Raleigh/Durham) split up
makes perfect sense; each goes out about 45-50 miles of primary coverage
area.

I should correct myself on a point: WNCN/NBC17, is actually
licensed to Goldsboro, even though NBC considers it its Raleigh/
Durham affiliate and has offices and studios in Raleigh. WTVD
probably could be picked up off-air in Goldsboro, since their
transmitter is at Auburn, NC, about 40 miles out. WITN and WNCT
have come in clearly in Goldsboro for as long as they've been on
the air.

The dividing line between Raleigh/Durham and Greenville/New Bern/
Washington includes the Wayne County (Goldsboro)/Lenoir County
(Kinston) line. WTVD really would not be able to put a decent signal
into anything east of that line; neither would WVEC until, as I said,
you get to Albemarle Sound. So in addition to the towns I listed that
need WCTI for ABC, add Greenville and Washington.

I have picked up Norfolk stations in Kinston; the first time I ever saw
"The Mike Douglas Show" was one afternoon when I picked up WAVY;
the signal was fairly good but I eventually lost it.

There is no possible way the Raleigh/Durham stations could extend their
signals much farther east than Goldsboro, Wilson, and Rocky Mount; there
is no possible way the Norfolk stations could extend their signals very far
south of Albemarle Sound. So the need for another market.

A little more discussion about the the line between the Raleigh-Durham and Greenville/Washington/New Bern markets. For one thing, conditions have changed considerably since 1966. In '66 the two markets were about the same size when ranked by # of households. The fairly highly populated corridor of Rocky Mount, Wilson and Goldsboro were all in the Greenville market, but were in effect a 4 station market made up of WRAL, WITN, WNCT, and WTVD. WITN and WTVD, with 1500 ft towers, had the stronger signals while WRAL had the highest audience since they were the only one of the 4 to air ABC programs. OTOH, WTVD did fine with their wild mix of out of pattern CBS and NBC programs. WCTI, only a few years old and with a very short tower far to the SE, was not a factor. Sometime in the 70s, the Rocky Mount/Goldsboro corridor was shifted into the Raleigh DMA, helping to fuel that market's rapid growth. All the while, WRAL and WTVD could be recieved fine as far east as Greenville, but the Greenville market extended as far as 100 miles east of there to the desolute Hyde County portion of the outer banks. The more developed part of the Outer Banks, Dare County and points north, were always in the Hampton Roads market as reception of those stations were more reliable. In the 80's, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12 all built 2000 ft towers which flooded the area from Greenville to Raleigh with great signals, but NBC still couldn't get a competitive station in Raleigh. They arranged for a down and out shopping channel in Goldsboro, channel 17, to be purchased and "moved" to Raleigh. A new tall tower was built at Auburn for WNCN, NBC17 Goldsboro, though I'm sure prople in Goldsboro continued to watch WiTN for NBC, ignoring their own "local" NBC station.

Now that I've looked at these schedules in more depth, I believe I can explain why WWAY delayed certain ABC programs, such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, by a week or more, but still aired them in their regularly scheduled time period. Note that nearby ABC affilate WRAL also delayed Ozzie and Harriet, though they aired it later that night. Apparently, WWAY was recieving their ABC network feed from WRAL rather than AT&T. This meant they were at the mercy of WRAL as to when they could air them live. You have to remember, Wilmington, then as now, was a tiny market and generally the networks did not provide telephone company feeds to these tiny markets. Before someone chimes in, I'll remind people that the Greenville/Washington/New Bern DMA, on the contrary, was ranked in the high 60s at that time and thus got telephone company feeds.

Interesting to note that CBS's entire Saturday prime time schedule (Gleason, Secret Agent, The Loner, Gunsmoke) was black and white. I wonder if there were any other color-free nights that season on either CBS or ABC?

ABC Monday ("12 O'Clock High," "The Legend Of Jesse James,"
"A Man Called Shenandoah," "Peyton Place" (as of midseason,
previously it had been on Friday), "Ben Casey") and Tuesday
("Combat!," "McHale's Navy," "F Troop," "Peyton Place," "The
Fugitive").

..not without the use of translators anyway. The use of such things was/is the reason why some markets are as big as their are such as Salt Lake City and Washington DC for examples.

I personally don't understand the thinking behind this why is
there a Greenville/New Bern/Washington market thread. Face
it, Beaufort, Pitt, and Craven counties (and the rest of the DMA)
are too far east to care about what happens in the Triangle, short
of state government (and 7, 9, and 12 are perfectly capable of
reporting that), and why would they want to watch Virginia news?
Only reason I can see people on the Outer Banks watching Norfolk,
despite the presence of WITN and WNCT on cable, is because Norfolk
stations were all they got before cable and that's a habit they got into.

To make an analogy for the benefit of those who live outside the South,
let's say we drop all those markets close to Pittsburgh (Wheeling/Steubenville,
Weston/Clarksburg, Johnstown/Altoona) and give those people nothing but
Pittsburgh and Youngstown stations. How many people in Ohio are going to
care about Pennsylvania news? How many people in Pennsylvania are going
to care about Ohio news? How many people in West Virginia are going to care
about either one?

No, better leave things alone.

You just described EXACTLY why the Hagerstown ( Maryland ), Winchester ( Virginia ), Martinsburg ( West Virginia ) and Chambersburg ( Pennsylvania ) never became a market in its own even though all four towns had their own commercial TV statio and all could be picked up in each other's cities. OK..say the four towns all became their own market we have a TV market that covers four states..COOL BEANS !! But is it? Would people in Virginia care about news from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania or West Virginia viewers really want to know what is going on in Maryland? Ah..well no. And yet there are still those who really believe this market would be a success..I beg to differ.

Too bad WHAG didn't learn this after spending tons of money in trying to become a VIRGINIA station only to end up attracting very few viewers and even getting dropped from a few systems in the commonwealth at the same time.

I'd say viewers in Winchester Va (which has never had it's own commercial OTA TV station) would care a lot more about watching news from DC than it would news from Chambersburg PA. For one thing, many of those viewers commute to the immediate DC area for work, shopping, or cultural pursuits daily--many have probably never been to Chambersburg. And even though Winchester is closer to Hagerstown (which actually does have a TV station) than DC, it is still more closely related to DC, due to the influences listed above.

Actually Winchester has WAZT whose tower is last I checked was on Fairmount Ave within the city of Winchester even though its studios are located to the south in Woodstock. For the record niether Martinsburg or Chambersburg have much in the way of their own TV either. WWPX only has a tower in Martinsburg on land they share with WLTF radio and nothing else meanwhile WJAL, well nobody knows its even there. Even when WJAL's tranitter burned down last year, locals were like .."WJAL..what?"

Harrisonburg, VA's WHSV a few years back launched "TV3 Winchester" some years back with studios on Millwood Ave in Winchester. What was once a strictly cable only channel, thanks to a tower near Front Royal now puts out a decent OTA signal all the way to Martinsburg. However a number of people are trying to get WJLA to sue and stop this. Well proof that not everyone wants to have their own "local TV".
