This post looks at the week of April 22-28, 1990. This week saw Oklahoma's first television station, KTVY (channel 4), change its call letters for the second time in its history, becoming KFOR-TV. The station (which began operations under the ownership of the E.K. Gaylord-owned Oklahoma Publishing Company as WKY-TV, which took its call letters from the radio station that OPUBCO owned alongside channel 4 until the latter was sold to the Evening News Association in 1976, at which point channel 4 assumed the KTVY calls) also introduced a new logo – a tri-lined, italic "4" – that remains in use as of 2019, albeit slightly modified from its original form. Much of the imaging KFOR introduced at the time harkened to its rival KOCO-TV, utilizing a graphics package consisting of moving lines similar in style to the John Christopher Burns-designed graphics package that KOCO introduced months earlier and branding as "4 Strong," a callback to the "5 Alive" moniker that KOCO used at the time.
At the time, KOCO appeared to have been in a fierce competition for first place in local news with KWTV (channel 9) at the time, while KFOR had settled into a close third place (where KOCO has tended to sit in recent years). The station's efforts to improve its news coverage under Palmer Communications ownership (which acquired KFOR from Knight-Ridder Broadcasting the year prior) – including an increased focus on in-depth reporting as well as strengthening its weather coverage and establishing the station as, according to eventual general manager Bill Katsafanis, "the CNN of Oklahoma City" by implementing the "24-Hour News Source" format – eventually had results. For the past couple of decades, KFOR has fought KWTV for first place in local news.
