KWAO, Sun City AZ was a Big Band station. Located in the Adult Retirement community of Sun City, they directed their programming to the people of that city and the surrounding area. The owners, being religious, ended their day with a two-hour block of religious programming.

KSTM was an MOR type station, but changed somewhere along the way to a rock format (I forget which genre). It wasn't my type of music, so I never tuned in.

As for KOY being affiliated with Mutual...I don't think so, unless they didn't carry the network news. I recall them doing the news from their own newsroom.

My grandparents lived in Sun City at the time (in fact, I lived with them for a few months in 1964) so I'm familiar with the area. They didn't listen to KWAO, though. IIRC, they liked KOOL.

I had the same problem with KSTM as I did with KWAO: I lived in NE Phoenix at the time and couldn't get either station well. KSTM became "The Storm" in the early '80s before becoming KVVA-FM, simulcasting AM 860 from 1987 to 1996, when the AM became KMVP.

I do remember KOY doing Mutual news in that era, but I don't think that it was there much longer. They had swapped CBS for Mutual with KOOL in the early '50s.

Did Phoenix ever have full-time Urban station back in the 70's, the only station I remember that was a full-time Urban was back in the 80's and that was the old KUKQ-1060.
