Slight correction, it was only the Portland and Seattle affiliates who did so. They were jointly owned and preferred to air news rather than show the game on time. I remember watching KAPP Yakima and they always aired the game live.

That makes more sense. Then again, I don't see why they chose to crop off the first hour for news.
